[Albion] Verbruggen trying to "gee up" the North Stand

I must say I am a little bit tired of it. Now and again it helps pump the crowd up, but Pedro was doing it from the first minute. Come on guys, concentrate on your own (poor) performance.
Think it was fine at the start, lot of tension in the stands (understandably) and it does create an atmosphere when the match is in the balance.

Asking the crowd to create a huge atmosphere when you're looking dead and buried against your biggest rivals is stupid though.

Unfortunately, watching the tv at home, for the first ten minutes, all I could hear was the Palace fans and their vile slanderous chants at Dunk. It was very loud and very clear.
I don't know if the club can have a word with Sky, and ask that mikes not be placed in front of the away fans, but it was awful and no apology from Sky about 'industrial language' either.
Interestingly, in the ground, I thought they were unbelievably quiet compared to others. For all their weird chants about Lewis they never really were loud enough to make any difference on the pitch.

Atmosphere was fine until the goals in the home end, and that's understandable. Sucked the life out of us on and off the pitch.

Regarding the way the atmosphere comes over on TV, I frequently read on here from people watching on TV that the crowd has been flat whereas being part of it it's been anything but. Maybe the issue is with the placement of the TV microphones?

Plus the ground acoustics. Put a flatter, lower surface above the North stand to better push the sound down and into the ground.

There is literally NOTHING any keeper could have done about that first goal. The original cross never reached the near post at a height the keeper can collect it - before JPVH blocks it straight to Sarr (who handles it into the path of Chalobah to smash in from 6 yards).

Very strange take - given that if you want a stick to beat Verbruggen with - he actually WAS shit for the second goal!
My bad……I actually did mean the second goal, my fit of rage may have distorted my memory, but that aside, he was shithouse yesterday….but so were the rest of the team…..and against that lot of all teams !

Still onwards and upwards, let’s hope they wake up a bit ready for the hammers !

Was he shithouse though? I don’t think he could do much about any of the goals, and made a couple of decent saves. He was the least of our problems.

The Amex is rocking when we turn round games like spurs and City. It needs the players to do something like at virtually every other ground in the country. Conceding soft goals isn't going to get the fans going. Had we finished the 1st half like we started the 2nd then fans will respond. Palace were playing us off the park in that final 10 before half time.

The same acoustic false ceiling they must have in the south stand?
Its not the acoustics that the issue

Notice how despite all their “Geeing up” on the pitch yesterday not one of them has had the grace to acknowledge the under par performance online
Good. There are only so many ways of saying, "not good enough from us today. We will learn from this and come back stronger.". Don't need to hear it - just beat West Ham please.

I’ve got a suspicion that Fab is telling the players to get the crowd going and this is how it is manifesting itself. He’s used to German crowds and often talks about The home atmosphere and its importance and can’t help but think he’s desperate to try and stimulate it and could well be telling the players to give us something to shout about.

It's grim oop north
We desperately need to re-group all singers in the North

Its so embarrassingly bad right now

The club can surely help fix this during pre-season

And please move the away end next to the north if you want a cracking atmosphere

Bit cringe having the players try and gee up the crowd, but goes to show we need to make some small changes

Two things on the first.

I know we have a set-piece coach, but our organisation on set pieces needs to be better, Bart is integral to that and we have to have a player in front of their player on the near post, he needs to ensure that happens (unless that isn’t the plan - then words fail me). Hear what you’re saying on the ricochet, but I felt there was a moment when he could have gone for the ball, he doesn’t strike me as the bravest goalie I’ve seen. It is split second stuff, and he would have taken a hit, but that happens.

Agree entirely re the second.

I wonder if the error at Fulham has knocked him for six….

I think this is very harsh and bordering on scapegoating.

For the corner, one of two things happened - either a) insufficient work has been done in training on defending set pieces, responsibilities not assigned appropriately (such as having a man on the near post!) or b) the outfield players didn’t follow the instructions.

Under no circumstances was Verbruggen at fault for the first goal. 99 times of 100 that gets cleared away by the player defending the near post (usually Welbeck when he plays).

In fact, if Welbeck was playing I don’t think we concede that goal. It was exactly the area he defends every corner.

Obviously disagree. And your point on Welbeck effectively backs up mine.

Edit - and re B - then someone needs to make it happen. The goalie or Dunk.

As for scapegoating, ridiculous, it’s a discussion. I accept it’s split second, but at that level IMO he could have been a bit sharper.
