There has been too many trite and point scoring comments on here. I pity the poor people of Venezuela and hope the regime is changed for the better.

This.

The people literally suffer and die, whilst global politicians and NSC’s entrenched whataboutists stay stuck in a uncaring left v right battle.

Overthrow the establishment, monarchy and burn all the churcheymgodmbotherers . . . .it'll never happen, probably easier to move to a fair stable country. . . . . If only there was one.

Everyone in Venezuela is equal, and I hope one day Britain follows their example.

It is certainly true that the USA has a long track record of financing opposition groups in Latin America - and now they complain that people from countries they've royally screwed with are seeking asylum in the US. In this case, the US now have a lapdog in Brazil with which to influence matters. Ironically, there are huge similarities between the methods of Maduro and Trump. Both are tinpot dictators.

This has been going on long before Trump came along, and what methods are you suggesting?

Anyism or system that doesn't want to play ball with the US, rightly or wrongly, will have sanctions put on it, and any country trying to bypass the sanctions will get sanctions too. It is an oil rich country that cannot sell oil because of restrictions.

I don't know much about what is going on in Venezuela, I know it's corrupt, but I would not be surprised if the opposition in Guaido is being financed by the US government.

Guido is himself a socialist..... Of course there is geo-politics at play. The US against, Russia/China/Cuba..... But there is no doubt whatsoever that Venezuela is a failed stated, a humanitarian disaster and it was all caused by the mismanagement of Chavez and Maduro. It was chavez who removed competent oil industry officials and workers in Venezuelas biggest economic provider and replaced them with party loyalists, he was fortunate of high oil prices, but production, due to mismanagement coupled with theft of state assets started under Chavez. Everything accelerated under Maduro as the global oil price collapsed and he started to expropriate more and more productive companies, hand them to loyal goons who would prop him up, only to watch their productivity nosedive. This crises is totally self inflicted by poor government and corruption.

Yes the US has slapped sanctions on Venezuela, since Feb this year, long after Maduro stole the last election in a ballot so rigged (with all opposition arrested) that every major international (and independent) monitor said, it was neither free, fair or genuine.

Old Trotsky Ken Livingstone tried to blame it all on the US, he got skewered by Andrew Neil, because its bullshit....this suffering is 100% the result of the failed and corrupt Venezuelan socialist government.

Ironically Putin is a fascist a (literally by definition - a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control, and being extremely proud of country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed), yet supports a murderous marxist. Purely because of a century old battle between Russia and the West.

I hope the people of Venezuela get a new start, very soon.

likewise, the people are starving... agree about Putin, he is a dangerous fascist. I just read a report that said Maduro was ready to leave and had an aircraft waiting this morning and only stayed because Putin had told him to ?

Its now a proxy war

Of course it's a failed state and it's relations with the US are a construct and continuation of the cold war, full of gun crime, drugs and kidnapping, and the police can be paid off too. Though I doubt this will suddenly stop overnight with Guaido in. The US doesn't get on with any of its South American dictating neighbours yet will do business with the Clown Prince the Butcher of Saudi Arabia.

Maybe if Venezuela toes the line with Guaido in power it could be the next Japan or South Korea?
