I dont think he should stop trying to cross because as a wing back (albeit not a natural one) it is part of the job description. His crossing is woeful however and someone needs to coach him to improve it..

It results in giving possession away every time. I know it's how Potter wants us to play and Lamptey can do it but for some reason Veltman can't.

I do agree. It's one of the downsides of playing a player out of position.

The pragmatic approach would be to pass infield, it slows us up, but at least we're less likely to be hit on the counter.

Separately, I think our LCB and RCB could be overlapping earlier and more often, but crossing isn't really their game either

I wonder how many shots we have from crosses during open play. It feels like not many. The goal was scored from a ball into feet and I think crosses from corners and free kicks result in more shots than crosses from open play. We don't have the height up front to be a threat.

But saying that we do play a lot of balls into feet too and play must be varied otherwise it's too easy for defenders.

Maybe not for Wednesday... but as soon as fully fit Lamptey comes back in straight away as far as I am concerned, much Like Lallana. when fit they have to play.

I think that Mac has the edge over Lallana right now - he's made a real difference.

Lamptey over Veltman is a bit more complex. I think they'll be rotated more

Would Tariq get his place back if he was fit for Wednesday...tricky

Yes.

Veltman is a 7 out of 10 player.

Lamptey is a match winner.

I am not convinced that Lamptey starts every time over Veltman. Particularly his record in 'finishing' games isn't great, and defensively he has been suspect at times - but you expect this from a young player in a debut season.

I think @Guiness Boy is on the right money where we may well see Veltman in the tougher games and Lamptey when we expect to be more attacking minded

I think the quite obvious answer is that Lamptey starts on the bench if fit.
Poor defenders spend 70 minutes chasing trossard, maupay, McAllister and Groß appearing all over the place, Veltman bows out from being solid and probing from a bit further back and then Lamptey just runs straight past them.

I'd have Lamptey in at RWB when fit.

Veltman may well get the nod over White for the RCB slot though.

Just think how good Veltman could be for us in his best position

If White departs on a big money transfer in the summer Veltman will become part of a central three, alongside Dunk and Webster.
And Lamptey will be our right wing back.

Not as good as Ben White.

Matt Clarke is also part of our succession planning, should White leave.

And in a couple of seasons Lars Dendoncker will be oven ready for the first team.

The Lancing Centre Back conveyor belt will be worth its weight in gold.

If only we could get a Centre Forward one installed.

You may be right mate

But Champs league semi final and, 30 odd Holland caps blah blah, i'd say Veltman has a very strong claim on a starting spot in his best position

I reckon you may be one of the many getting fooled by the preposterous low price tag. We have a top international player in Veltman who is at his peak

Either way GP sees them all the time. He'll know what to do when Tariq is fit and there's a battle royale for defensive places. It will be tight

His natural position is on the left of the three, isn't it? Could be a big advantage to have a natural left sider. If he's good enough, of course.

All signs appear to be positive.

He currently ranks 9th overall out of all championship players by whoscored rating, for players with 10+ appearances.

3rd for defenders only.

Veltman has played very well , barely ever makes a mistake . Absolute bargain buy . Great to have such a high quality replacement for Lamptey . I think the new guy Karbo is meant to be super quick , if he can defend as well as Veltman , we are in for a treat . Lamptey one side and Karbo the other .

Yeah Karbownik looks quite pacey from what I've seen and also has the ability to go past people (not just run down the flank and cross). He can play on either flank and in DM. Not sure if he's match fit, guessing not as I would hope he would be least be making the bench if fit.

As far as I'm concerned Burn has only had 1 shocker for us against Wolves, and the winger that on his day does that to any full back he likes.

Burn is more than good enough in my opinion.

Veltman back on topic has been excellent of late.

I agree, the Wolves game is the only time I've ever questioned his ability. He doesn't give the same levels of confidence as Webster/White in a defensive position but since Bong is no longer around people need someone to moan about. Usually a solid 6 in most games but never a 9 which isn't enough for some people
