My kids went to Varndean and BHASVIC, but a few years ago now. Both very good, but my understanding is that Varndean is a bit more 'supportive' of students who may need support. BHASVIC is more 'get on with it'. Having said that, my kids thoroughly enjoyed and got on well at both. I believe that BHASVIC does do slightly better academically.

As I say, only what I understand talking to my kids, their friends and other ex pupils I have known.

Thanks for the replies, even the entertaining ones regarding past teachers!

They were helpful to read and crucially no one was dissing the college either.

Fantastic teacher, got me a good A level in history - yes had a violent streak that got him into trouble, I remember having my head slammed into the desk over some ill advised comment - but he was great, amazingly he had been a consientious objector in the war. There were some real characters as teachers including the latin teacher who was a mean shot with chalk fired from his model roman catapult. Great memories!!

I think "a violent streak" is a fantastic euphemism. I didn't know he'd been a conchie though - I wonder why. He certainly wasn't against violence.

Winker Watson! He got me through my Latin O level. He is also fondly remember by Varndean's chess players. Sadly, he died rather young

I recall Watson was a tad overweight. But I did play in one of his chess teams. Loved the rifle club too, another team sport where I represented Varndean. Guessing that's long gone.

I went to that rifle club once. I had ten shots, none hit the target but the boy next to me had 11 holes in his. I was told not to come back :lolol::lolol:

My kids don't believe it when I said there was a rifle range at the school. Can you imagine suggesting it now?

Don't remember the rifle club but do the Cadet Corps or whatever they where called (junior soldiers), that ended just as I was about to get into senior school, also remember there was boxing as one of the sports - that though also got stopped
