Before you are too smug about this, JPVH was responsible for the goal we conceded and also got to play alongside a class right back as opposed to a 39 year old makeshift.

Totally unfair comparison.

I'm please JPvH has stepped up and really would walk into several top flight teams, but it's going to take more than that game to prove that VH is better than Webster.
Plus, he walks funny

Totally agree with you. I'm not being smug, just pointing out that some write off players too quickly. And for that matter, over hype them too. Me probably included.

Webster had an awful game Vs Wet Sham and JPVH had a good game vs Toon.

Impossible to call just based on the last 2 games, but, for me, Webster is more error strewn and god knows how many 'fancy' passes he's tried, failed and given the ball away as a result when there was an easier option available. Both are good defenders but JPVH seems to make the better call on passing and decision making.

If I'm RDZ, and I've been given the choice of selecting Van Hecke and Veltman who performed well against Newcastle or Webster and Milner who performed awfully against West Ham, I'm picking the former.

I understand the point you're making, but if we're looking at form, it just seems more understandable to select those two for our upcoming match since they were excellent yesterday and therefore, as you say, prove they are better.

JPVH is a more physical presence than Webster, so I’d always chose him in front of Webster against teams like WHU and Newcastle. Both, barring injuries, will get plenty of game time but RDZ will now probably pick JPVH when we need aggression against strong forwards.

It’s not a case of one is good and the other is shit, Webster is an integral part of the squad but no longer an automatic first choice imo.

Van Hecke is starting to prove me wrong and I’m loving it!

Seems like that balance problem comes from their midfield. On paper Tonali, Joelinton, Guimaraes should be one of the best midfields in the league. The trouble is they are all too similar, they all want to play that number 8 box to box position and so they don’t have the balance for all 3
A lot of Newcastle supporters agree with you. Seems like a lot of teams need a good defensive midfielder.

I think they’re both good in their day. Van Heck played one his best games for us, Wilson goal was unlucky, a solid 8/10 today.
This. There is no need to pick between them. It's a squad game and we'll need both (and Igor) as season progresses.

Van Hecke is looking better and better the more he plays. Webster is going backwards in comparison.

It’s a tough call to make but I’m edging towards Van Hecke now being first choice. Does mean Dunk playing left sided CB, but that might help him get into the England starting 11!

Suspect we are approaching the end of the Webster era.

Already think Van Hecke is a better player, with obviously considerably more potential.

Still find it crazy that a player we'd be salivating over a few years ago is now considered not quite good enough for us... :moo:

I hope this never ends.

Webster's injuries last season can't have helped, always has taken a few matches to rediscover his form.

Should have played Webster tonight, Van Hecke showed his lack of experience and looked all over the place at times, I would like our defenders to defend, he tried in spirit but the game was way to big for him.

JPVH is a young player, learning and getting better by the game. With Veltman on his right and Dunk on his left he is not out of place in a top six PL team at all. With Milner on his right and Igor (making his debut in a baptism of fire) on his left, it's a much harder game. Dunk unavailable I understand - but WTF no Veltman?

I would have had Veltman, Webster van Hecke and Estupinan, I think Roberto cocked up, in a rare event.
