Brighton / Hove actually

I would have included the link in the comment tbh. And anyway what's with all the exclamation marks? I know what one means "a sudden cry or remark expressing surprise, strong emotion, or pain." but 5 iof them sounds really serious? :lolol:

It has just taken me forty five minutes to get from Bevendean to the Royal Sussex Hospital and the same to get back.
An hour and a half to travel less than six miles.
Traffic gridlocked due to building work at every junction.
I can remember not long ago it would take twenty minutes both ways.

I have just been told by someone who lives in Elm Grove that their local councillor advised that they are short on budget to complete this project and are drip feeding funds in when possible, which would explain what appears to be a lack of contractors on site!!

Anyone else heard this?

I haven't heard that one but I have heard a rumour from a very high place that there is going to be loads of money for everything after 31 January. We're going to be unleashed apparently.

I travel past these works most days, and there's always loads of hi-viz clad workman in action. They have been spacing out and planting trees, ornamental grasses and other herbage. How long after the safety fencing is dismantled will we have to wait to see the trees snapped in half and the white retaining walls around the mature trees in the pavement covered in graffiti?

is works still going on on this? ( been out of town for a few weeks)

It was going on this week, although nothing Saturday or today. They were laying the salvaged kerb blocks which used to be under the bow-top fencing around the gardens, as part of the pavement outside where the Astoria used to be. They were also spreading sand over the Elm roots to aid their protection. I have a particular interest in the horticultrural side of this project as I was in charge of this area throughout the '80s.

Two words: Electric Bikes

Yup, just shy of 22 stone and I have no issues doing a 25 mile ride, including Rottingdean to Falmer and up Coldean Lane. They are expensive but still cheaper than a car.

The 9 mile commute from Peacehaven still isn't fun with a headwind, but the motor takes the edge off.

We're gonna throw this all away, aren't we?

I went past last week. The plants they've put in so far a looking really nice. I really hope people respect this area and don't take short cuts through the flower beds or let their dogs walk amongst them to empty out.

It does look nice Jack, a massive improvement on how it was. I hope they start phase 3 soon, Edward street to the pier, then, when the arches have been renovated, they can pedestrianise Madeira drive. What a wasted opportunity that area is sun soaked south facing beach side area and we use it as a fu^^%%g car park.

I can't explain my feelings when I go past there now. I was in charge of the gardens throughout the 1980's. The lawns were manicured to a stupid degree, the beds were kept weed-free, watered and fed regularly, the gullies around the outside swept each week, litter picked twice a day etc etc. The public weren't even allowed to step foot on the lawns. These gardens were my pride and joy.
I've been involved in managing their decline too in recent times. It was in 1999 when most of the small perimeter fencing was removed that things went down hill. Events began to be staged like The Ladyboys and Spiegle Tent, making the Council much needed money but to the detriment of the look of the gardens. It was impossible to get them back to how they should have looked with the summer starting as soon as they left the sites.
I'm looking forwards to seeing the gardens finished. They have the potential to look really superb, but they will need the person in charge of the maintenance to be fanatical, but I fear there's not a lot of people like that about now-a-days unfortunately.

It's looking much smarter than before - only problem is there's virtually no cycle parking going in (4 'sheffield' stands between Cheapside and Trafalger Street) for all those cafes, restaurants, shops, flats etc.
Hope Phase 3 comes soon.

Fair point although nothing should stop veteran cars, bikes, commercial vehicles and the Brighton Burn-up. They help make Brighton what it is, in a nice way. And what about the speed trials?
