we just came back about two weeks ago. we went over for fallas and had a fabulous time. we try to go every year for fallas. i have nothing but good things to say about the place. anywhere that spends hundreds of thousands of euros on papier mache statues then stands around getting drunk before burning them to them ground has to be good.
Went last November with a group of mates. Plenty to do and see, more or less able to walk everywhere, but a good tram/metro system, including a link straight into the city centre from the Airport. Oceanografico is a good way to spend a morning/afternoon. If you go at the weekend and Valencia are at home, try to go - shouldn't be difficult to get tickets unless they are playing Real Madrid or Barcelona I would imagine.
yep, the oceanografico is a great way to spend the day, my kids love it. that whole area in what used to be the river bed is nice and the area for the americas cup is worth seeing. also the zoo there is very good. the bullring is one of the better ones i have been to but that will probably upset people on here, but if it is your thing it's a good one. the shopping is good as well.
The Old Town has some nice bars, with plenty of women looking for business! the language was a bit of a barrier but if you did want to go upstairs with them it wasnt hard to get the message across!
we went the year before the Admirals Cup and it was being rebuilt.
Off the beaten track can be a bit scary, there are lots of Africans trying to see you dodgy gear and a couple of times the Mrs felt uncomfortable ( especially as once she was knocked flying by one of them being chased by the police) I think that put her off.
the IMAX cinema and the big exhibition halls were fantastic ( we saw some of teh terracotta army there from China) I am not a fan of performing Dolphins, but that was pretty good fro the kids.
the tram ride to the beach was great and the Beach itself fantastic.
The restaurants around the cathederal are very good and you must try Valencia Piella ( its all sorts including rabbit! buy what makes it different is that the rice is black from squid ink!!!
Been there twice and saw a game each time. Lovely stadium, got lots of character, and has one of the steepest terraces that I have ever had ther pleasure of sitting in!
If you do go to a game, I would highly recommend visiting Monolo's (the guy who bangs the drum at all Spain's games, and is also a Valencia supporter and minor celebrity) bar if you can. He's a genuinely nice bloke, and it's a nice bar too! It's right next to the ground. It was a few years ago that I went though, so might be worth double checking it's still there.
Valencia itself is also very nice, so it's win win!
manalo el de bombo. he and his bar/museum are still there. top bloke, fantastic company. he walked for 20,000 kilometers to see spain in the world cup in the 80s. hitch hiked all the bloody way.
the spanish on-trade (i.e. bars and clubs) has reported an 80% drop in sales this year, don't expect much night life outside el carmen - which, if you're like me, and you don't like the full on tourist schpiel, you'll be a bit dissapointed.
a city the size of manchester and hardly a soul out.
