I knew that about the Four Tops - didn't realise Lydon was part of that story as well.

Ironically i Knew this about Lydon but not the Four tops !

Says a lot about our respective preferred music persuasions.

Wasn't this Stephen Stills? I seem to remember a story about Charles Manson also auditioning for The Monkees, but I don't know how much truth there is in it.
