Offering them cash is not a carrot for most car dealers unless they don't declare the sale. They earn very nicely from commission they receive from the finance companies.
If you've no part exchange, offer them £200 less than you would be be happy to buy for...they huff and puff and then both parties will comprise. When at that point...be cheeky and ask for little extras...next MOT, new mats, next free service. It also depends on how well the company/salesman has done that weak...if its been slow they are willing to give more away and visa versa of course. 10% off would be the best you could expect on 10K. Good luck.

.........Is the right answer. Also remember that although car registration prefixes change in March/ September that year changes have a bearing on a cars value. It's 2016 now so the car is a year older. Good point about finance commission and some garages will only take a lump of cash ( over £3000 ) if you sign a form. Something to do with money laundering apparently.Unless you're hopelessly in love with the car, make your best offer then as suggested, walk on to view the "others" on your list. Best of luck. If you want an accurate Glass's guide price PM me.

I've always found that getting the dealer to make the first move leads to more money off or additional extras than if you begin asking for specifics at the start of the negotiation - ask them how they can make the deal more attractive for you and go from there.

From this you can usually get an idea whether they've had a bad month or not and how willing they are to negotiate. If you start by asking for 'too much' the Salesman may lose interest or be annoyed and there's pretty much zero chance of going any lower than your first offer, but you may achieve it by my suggested method above. Obviously don't accept their first offer and you could always request a chat with their Sales Manager.

I'm a Buyer by trade (different industry) and do love the art of negotiation!

When we bought our Kia new from Tates they said they wouldnt give a cash discount as they prefer a car to be bought on credit. Obviously they get a commission. Also they wouldnt accept cash as apparently under money laundering rules it is illegal to accept a cash payment in excess of £7k. Any purchase above that price must be made via a bank debit or transfer in order to leave a 'money trail'. As per Tates Pyecombe.

Think what would have been company policy rather than 'law' either that or an attempt to sell you finance. Worked in banking etc for many years and there is no upper limit unless we suspect them of laundering. Even now working at an airline we have had cash payments for £10k for tickets, rare, but does happen

Cash discount only works for dealers who are not going to declare the correct price, large dealers will not entertain a cash discount but may offer free service etc.

Tates said it was the law so I accepted it as I didnt know any different and hadnt heard if it before. My brother bought my mothers house by paying off all the beneficiaries, me included, and wanted to give the money in cash but was prohibited by his solicitor saying it had to be paid via a bank.

Tried negotiating at a Suzuki dealership in Ansty. Despite also taking finance got nothing off the car and a take it or leave it attitude. Good luck Bozza. Don't tell them how far you've come till you agree a price!!

Didn't even get to the haggling stage. Car was rejected after a drive (not by me).

Brilliant.

Cash purchaser is one who pays straight away, doesn`t have to be money........Cheque,Debit card all considered cash purchaser,

Indeed - it would have been debit card. Possibly credit card, depending on the extra charges, for the Virgin miles earned.

Its all psychology. If the salesman is convinced you will buy it at the advertised price they wont accept an offer. They need to be persuaded that you have other options in mind and that a reduction might just land the sale.

I bought a nearly new Citroen BX from Tates when they were a Citroen dealership, twenty or more years ago. Struck a very good deal with them as I remember.

They also have, or had, another branch in Portslade I think.

Not that this reminiscing has the slightest bit to do with the OP's question.

Thanks!

In a bit of a hurry - Mrs B wrote off our car on Thursday. Garage is in Southampton and state car can be driven away today so I was intending to do that if we like it.

Hope Mrs B is OK.

Whatever others say "cash is King"...All businesses want turnover...You should get at least 10% off asking price of secondhand car. It is not the cash aspect.
It is the fact that you have not got a trade in that you want dealer to take. They all ad a bit so they can offer good trade in price.

Its not illegal to accept cash in excess of £5000, but they do have to duty to report it to HM customs and excise.

Virgin Atlantic Amex card. Black one in my case (costs £140 or so a year but the return on miles is a lot better than the one with no fee). Use the miles to get PE/Upper Virgin flights.

We got £200 knocked off a three year old car last July, with our old one in part exchange. We already had a bank loan in place, so just needed to bridge the gap. We also got a free MOT & service thrown in.

What would you expect to be able to knock off the screen price of a used car at a large independent dealer when paying cash?

Dear Bozza,

As I actually have a rather lovely automobile for sale right now, I would be honoured to offer you a minimum of 5% discount with a possibility of this rising along with the asking price as appropriate. I await your further instruction.......
