I went to the US last year and didn't realise that I needed an ESTA. Tried to check in; was told I needed an ESTA; went to the airline desk; applied for and was approved for one. All took about 15 minutes.

Not the recommended as my blood pressure was probably off the scale but as long as you are not a registered terrorist and don't admit to anything else it is not difficult.

Brighton factually.....
Think you were unlucky then. Four of us drove from Montreal into Vermont. We passed through Canada border control and onto US. We were told we needed visas to be paid in US Dollars.
We never had any as we were going to change currency in US. Me and my brother walked back through no-mans land to Canadian crossing to change money. We had no passports with us as our wives stayed at US control to fill in all the paper work. Took about half hour in total to complete and we had plenty of laughs with the US border guards.

On our return at midnight the borders were unmanned and we drove straight back into Canada. We sent the visa green leaving card back to US Embassy in London on our return home.

My experience was coming from Windsor into Detroit, treated like shit there was a lot of yanks in there turned back by the Canadians for D.U.I's etc trying to go to the casinos. A Muslim lady came and sat next to me in this god awful waiting area with her two kids... I looked pissed off and she turned to me with her ticket and asked how long have you been here... Me with about two days growth been on a plane driven etc turned to her and said three days she looked mortified until people started laughing... That was funny.

Strangely I had bigger problems travelling from the US into Canada on a Greyhound bus, we had to get off the bus with our luggage and all go through passport control on foot.
