The United States Comedy Cup 2024

Group D

Let's wrap up the groups. I find this an intriguing one. Two shows from the same team, and a popular if probably slightly marmite cartoon. And Cheers, which will bring out the heritage vote.

Parks & Recreation - 2009-2015, 124 episodes

Another show I have half delved into, but never fully two-footed. Find it hard not to compare with The US Office as the similarities are really, really striking.

Cheers - 1982-1993, 270 episodes

Very popular in the US back in the day. Did it travel over here? Ted Danson has a MASSIVE forehead.

The Office (US) - 2005-2013, 22 episodes

Steve Carell is a huge part of why this show was such a success - for me it was never quite the same after he left - both the warmth and the comedy downgraded at that moment. Improved immeasurably once it stopped trying to clone the UK Office and fully became it's own thing. Got a bit rubbish and tired towards the end, as so many American comedies do (IMO). Many, many great lines - "I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY" up there for me.

Family Guy - 1999-2025, 420 episodes

A show I used to love, but can now find a little irritating. Has had some incredible moments, but find it a little too one-note for a show that has over 400 episodes. Probably wise to bow out. I also enjoyed South Park's ribbing of how Family Guy comes up with it's "wacky" scenarios for the purposes of a joke (will post below).

Reminder - Two qualify from each group into the Quarter finals. You have ONE vote per group, so use it wisely. Please feel free to link to relevant YouTube videos, or justify your chosen comedy in writing.

Totally agree with you @Mellotron about The Office. I watched quite a bit when Carell was in it and thought it was pretty good (and, heresy, I never really took to the original British version). Probably couldn't be made now with lines such as (when Mike's trying to handle diversity):
"Is there a term besides 'Mexican' you'd prefer? Something less offensive?"

'Cheers' was an iconic comedy in its day. Along with 'Taxi' it was when we Brits really first realised that the Americans could make clever, layered comedy and not just shows like 'I Love Lucy'. However if people haven't heard of Frasier they definitely won't have heard of Cheers.
"Can I pour you a drink Norm?"
"It's a bit early for that isn't it?"
"A bit early for a drink?"
"No, a bit early for stupid questions!"

Slightly shocked at the lack of support for The Office (US) there. Thought it was a pre-tournament favourite potentially.
