If it wasn’t for the clueless squads and professionals who have consistently voted for Dale as players’ player of the season and a succession of experienced managers keeping faith in him when all he can do is pass it sideways or backwards we’d have got rid years ago.

This. Garcia, Hughton, Dyche, Potter and various Albion squads are all clueless when it comes to assessing a player.

The great survivor, Dale Stephens stays, whilst AK, Hemed and Kayal have moved on

In his specialist DM sitter role, I rate the player highly.

It’s interesting to see that Potter feels DS deserves a future with us.

Great player.

More to his game as well....good range of passing against Valencia last Friday....he has a fair bit in his locker that’s not always seen...I’m hoping the cheap jibes will disappear this coming season

Peach of a pass to Locadia in that game, preceding the corner from which we won the penalty. He’s always been good with the ball. Shame some have never been able to see that, in the deeper role, his job was to break up play and move the opposition from side to side to open up gaps. He would often be the one trying to play a killer ball too - and then get moaned at for losing possession. Don’t know what some people watch.

I think not.Signed by Garcia.Never played a game for the dim finn,Never played under Jones.Yet to start a league game under Potter.

Ok I stand corrected, as he was injured, therefore he has only currently played a competitive game under 2 managers

The most over-rated player to have worn an Albion shirt,

Living on borrowed time.He should have gone and Kayal stayed

This isn't our old friend Bushy back again is it? Punctuation (and viewpoint) a bit, er, wanky....

Probably the player who is too slow for anything other than a bottom 5 team? You really can’t see it? He certainly has some strengths and is probably a strong presence in the dressing room but if we are to move beyond the very compact style of football favoured by Hughton, I can’t see him making the higher grade consistently enough

I like Stephens but he was awful at times last season. Fulham away, Muff and Cardiff home and there were others BUT I believe he was playing under instructions. Massive few months coming up for Dale I think, if the team change style and he can or can’t then we’ll know.

I think he's a great player, and he offers so much more than just his ability to kick a ball around. Arguably a Brighton legend, and yet so many don't rate him. It feels like they want him to be something he's not and then get annoyed at that

You really have to be a bit special if you think Mooy is here to challenge Stephens, for his place in the team.

Mooy is here to challenge both Propper and Stephens.

Don’t care how ‘undervalued’ Stephens is or how much ‘class’ Propper has .... for the second half of last season they were both shocking.

The amount of times our central midfield is bossed by other sides has to change.... and both Stephens and Propper need to step up if they want to remain Premier League players.

Who will be our midfield “enforcer” this season, apart from Mooy I can’t see that we have anyone who can fill that role. You are not saying we won’t need one are you?

I keep seeing posts that Stephens isn’t good enough but no suggestions as to who should replace him. He is an excellent lower PL midfielder imo and we are lower PL.

Even though they play in the same position and have very similar playing statistics? Of course he's here to challenge Stephens you weapon

As was shown on the Mooy thread, he plays a lot further forward than Stephens ever has. His heat map is more like a Propper/Gross hybrid.

Anyhow, what will be interesting is whether a new manager also uses Stephens as the midfield general. Potter arguably has more options than Hughton had, if Stephens is still playing regularly, then those not rating him may need to wonder if 2 top flight managers know more than them.
