Update on my "Halifax" thread

You may recall the problems i was having over a charge for £39 that meant i lost half my DSS income? Well after much banging head against a wall etc the outcome is the worst possible case.....as follows
BT re submitted there applicvation for Direcr Debit. Halifax, despite my being on benefits refuesd to help. Now the end result is that on friday my 2weeks giro has all but been written off with me getting about a fiver. the next payment i get will be nearly xmas so i'll be living on my last few tins of beans and bread till then. Bt will be cutting me off in next few days i am sure, and as for heating forget it...so thought i'd wish you all a happy xmas in lieu of my absence.

i tried all ideasthat everyone kindly offered and thank you all. its now 18 months since my breakdown lost me everything but clearly there was a bit more to lose......

ive mailed Mental health team, friends at church and a couple of pals but since i lost job partner and home i dont have quite contacts i had.....makes me larf (figuratively) that im a qualified counsellor with 20 years social care experience, but dont matter who you are when chips are down. in my work i met men who on the thursday had more than i could dream of having and two weeks later i was giving them a quid on the Level.....sorry if i sound a tad peed off, reallt thought things were on the up

just back from DSS to try to stop my giro going in for friday, very typical response "i think its too late sir, 10 days notice sir, and anyway we have sent the xmas bonus sir" whatever the f*** that has to do with it

Hope you get everything sorted out as your situation sounds harsh. Have you tried the DSS or CAB to see if there is anything they can do to help?

I had Abbey recently want to charge me £80 in charges for going overdrawn - an unfortunate mistake due to cheque not clearing quick enough ( or maybe it was my fault for not checking it had cleared, not that that is important) - i stormed into my local branch and demanded to see the manager - needless to say i didn't get to see the manager staright away but i was escorted to a desk where i stated my case and they wiped of an initial £50 - i then went on to protest about the disgraceful charges and the other outstanding £30 left - i mentioned the fact the we have two mortgages with them and that i would be moving these forthwith - The manager was then summoned and my charges quickly waived. Jobs a good'un

If in doubt complain , complain and complain some more but always be polite.

As it's a member of a financial institution they should have been making notes on your complaint (as it come from the client it becomes a reportable complaint if mot dealt with by COP next day). If this hasn't happened contact the Financial Obudsman saying that your complaint was not handled in a correct manner. This should buck Halifax's ideas up. I bank with them and have had every late payment on my credit card waived ;) !

I completely understand - I'd be having a chat with the banking ombudsman if I were you - Halifax are taking the piss if you ask me! Completely out of order on their behalf to put somenoe in a position of having no phone or heating, and you should be having those charges returned as many people on here are also doing!

There are some letters already written on web sites like this one:

Bank Charges although I doubt that will help your immediate problem.
Possibly your local consumer advice bureau can help? and I'd be sitting on the bank managers desk breathing firey words down his throat too!!

I will get my Mental health worker onside. i take note of what you are saying. Without being too detailed my health problems centre around post traumatic stress and it is hard for me to "confront" at any level so i will try get an advocate. you have been very helpful and supportive all of you. i thank you all..

the older amongst yo 48+ lol may recall me in the days of the battles at Luton, Bournemouth (H), Reading etc..i was the stupid **** weraing a long white industrial coat with Brighton Rock scrawled over it...real anonymous lol

gwpdylan I was in the exact same situation when I was on benefits before my bankruptcy.

I had to apply for a crisis loan from the social fund in the benefits office.

Have you explored this option with someone from the DSS?

Means a lot of forms to fill in and hanging around in that dingy office, but it got me the much needed cash in the end

Good plan - get someone to help you sort that out! - because I do believe you have a case!

If you're having issues with BT billing, phone up and talk to us. There are procedures for holding off billing dates if required, particularly for the basic line rental/calls - less so for BB.

Have you tried your local Citizens Advice Bureau ? They are usually pretty good with this sort of stuff.

If your DD has been honoured by your bank, ask your bank to refund this straight away and get it cancelled with the bank, who will inturn notify the merchant.

the brighton library has FREE net access, if needed. up to 1 hour per day.

it's also warm, and dry.. stick with it, and appeal to helifax's compassionite side (if they have one).. if all else fails, move to a different bank (one with debit card or cashcard only, with no overdraft facility, so you cant incur fees..

You should qualify for legal aid, call Community Legal Service Direct on 0845 345 4345, you should be able to speak to a debt and welfare benefits advisor for some advice. They also hold a directory of all legal aid solicitors, and will be able to point you in the direction of other organisations who can help. I work at the Legal Services Commission so if you need any help with legal aid / legal advice let me know.
