Thank you for all the sage advice. I find the hard line no nonsense approach most appealing, though it does need balancing with the gesture of the family freind.

Don't bother with the balance bit! Tough line all the way. If you give in now how long before your family "friend" appears with Arsenal tickets they just happen to have got and you are guilt ridden into letting your son go. Kerb it now. People like that need to know where they stand.

You could always cut it in half and give one half back, just to show you appreciated the gesture

My father in law delivered a Leeds shirt for my boy when he was three years old. Then the sister in law gave us a Man u one. My wife didn't understand my dislike of them and my son actually wanted to wear them.

They simply got lost in the washing one day. It doesn't take a youngster long to forget.

Anyway what kind of family friend would buy a different shirt to the fathers team? I would get killed if I done that with my god children, that said there dad is a brighton man. Quite right, none of my family "friends" would even dare. Call me harsh if you like but the guy would be told in no uncertain terms where to stick it.

Let him wear it. Feed him Ribena. Let him puke on it. Stick it in the wash - hot wash, cold rinse. It will come out stained and too small to put on. Use it for wiping up small accidents that any pets might make.

Living in Salisbury, where the nearest 'top' team is Southampton, I'm proud that all 3 Crisp Jrs are Albion fans. It's been a struggle against cousins passing down their Manure/Scum/Gooner shirts to them, but although they've worn them they've all seen the light! In fact they're all proud to be Brighton fans in classes full of Chelsea and Arsenal supporters. Yes my sister managed to marry the only Palarse fan in Salisbury.

I have to say when my boy was born he got sent an arsenal kit from my uncle, and a west ham kit from my wifes cousin.

He wore them both quickly for a photo to email to both parties, never wore them again as went to the charity shop, with loads of old toys.

I've considered the following:

a) that I return it to Arsenal.com so the family freind can get his money back
b) I give it to one of the many families around here that do support Arsenal (not likely that option will be accepted)
c) give it to Shirts 4 Africa (option should appeal in theory, but charity goes out the window when it comes to etiquette - my wife will go mad)

but none of those options quite work for me...

I'm going to have it amdended so it makes humour of the Arsenal aspect of it and declares my little Charlie an Albion supporter at the same time. I can get letters printed on it so it can read something like 'I was given this lousy Arsenal outfit for Xmas, but I'm Brighton just like my Dad' or something to that effect.

My grandson is 8, and he stays with us every friday night, he is as welsh as welsh can be (mothers welsh, my son is english, but he was born in wales and goes to a welsh school etc etc) .....BUT you ask him who the best football, or even rugby teams are, (and we did in fact have this self same conversation only last night) and EVERYTIME the boy says.............ENGLAND !!!!!!!
It just goes to show how influenced a youngster can be, basically, he's had his dad and his uncle and his grandad, all going onto him for the past 8 years about how great england are, he knows nothing else and because he hears me going on about Brighton & Hove Albion all the time, (and he hears me listening to the home games on Seagulls World) hes now saying to me he wants me to take him to see a game, which i of course, will do in time, i also give him all the programmes from all the away games i attend, and he loves reading them, so a future ALBION fan in the making i do believe




Moral of all this......yes kids are well and truly influenced by what you tell them......... SO KEEP THAT BLOODY ARSENAL SHIRT AWAY FROM HIM.....
