Can't see that any government would find that a valid reason to stop the law thankfully!

Oh, that all makes sense now.

I had heard that the government were making it illegal to sell 17 year old cigerettes. I thought that was wierd. Why would anyone try selling cigerettes that had been hanging around for that long. They would have probably gone off. Or whatever cigerettes do if they are left hanging around for ages.

Im not sure I see this as anything but a good idea.

Me too. I'm hoping our 17 year old wont get served and she will then find better ways of spending her cash for the next 5 months and give up the disgusting habit for good!

i'm not saying its a bad idea i'm saying that 16 and 17 year olds who have legally been purchasing cigarettes will not understand why they cannot legally purchase them anymore. it would have been better to do this in two steps 17 now then 18 next year.

This can only be a good thing, especially for people like me who buy underage kids stuff in exchange for a fag/beer/go on their girlfriend.

I think they are clever enough to work it out..................................

Dont forget , youngsters , that you will need proof of age from Oct. 1st to purchase your fags if you appear to look under 21. Retail staff who sell tobacco and alcohol plus any other age restricted items such as fireworks will be especially vigilant. There is a £80 penalty fine for anyone caught selling age restricted items and there will be loads of test purchases by local authorities , Trading Standards and the local Police. It is not the shop or supermarket who is initially in trouble , it is the person who sold it that gets the fine and possibly sacked.

I would have thought there may have been a cut off date, if you are 16 before 1st oct you can still buy.

Has the law not been staged in so that anyone who was 16 when it the was passed was still allowed smoke until 18? Thats how it was done here... law passed whatever day (lets say 1st may 98), technically illegal but not enforced to sell to anyone who was 16 a day later than that; signs in shops and enforcement changed on 1st may 2000.

Anyway, do you really think its going to be enforced properly? 16 year old gets drink, lottery tickets, etc, frequently as it is.

The sooner 17 year olds learn some respect for the law and society the better in my mind. They can't stomp about pouting until they get their way, shouting at saleclerks in corner stores or hanging about generally causing a nusciance....all a result of odd parenting!

If they have to make it law to get some respect then I'm all for it!

I agree with the change in the law but it does seem a little unfair on 16 and 17 year olds who have been legally buying fags. I think there should be a period of a year where police don't prosecute shopkeepers for selling to over 16s

Quite the contrary - I'm not keen on PARENTS who raise disrespectful and unsociable teenagers....actually not just teenagers but any children/teenagers/toddlers/babies whatever - bad parenting in general!!

I've never met a parent who has raised the perfect child tede and I doubt I ever will, Unfortunatly with teenagers they go through a horrible few years in they're life when nothing they do makes sense and it does'nt matter how you bring them up they all have you pulling your hair out at some stage.

no they cannot be sold to anyone under 18 ,these teenagers will probably find other ways of getting cigarettes or unfortunatly go on to other easily available drugs

But there is no such thing as a perfect child BB, well maybe but that'd be boring! What annoys me in the context of this thread is that when I'm in Somerfields or the corner shop or whatever, and the sales clerk says can I have your ID - I am eternally angered by what these "young people" think that its ok to say if they realise they've been rumbled. The language and downright rude behaviour is appalling!

What sort of manners are those? how is that respectful to someone who is just doing their job? Thats my beef...
