I have to say that France makes England look like a 3rd world nation. I have never had that much of blind pride in all things English. We have had a great history for sure but nothing much to shout about for the last couple of decades. I used to be a keep the pound at all costs person but am now firmly in the Pro European camp. I mean what is there to be hanging onto ?. Life in the Euro Zone is so much better.

The Drive from Le Havre to Caen saw 2 bridges of stunning architecture the second bridge was head and shoulders above anything I have seen in England. The whole place has so much more style even the street lights are stylish. The way of life in Normandy was relaxed and the Towns and Villages extremely well kept and clean, not a speck of rubbish on the street. There were no hoodies hanging around or gangs of Chavs roaming the streets. The kids were not walking down the streets playing a PS2 or looking down texting someone on their mobiles.

The whole place is far more civilised and the night out is a couple of drinks in the bars around the main square and then home at 9ish , no " lets go out and get as pissed as we can " culture. Everyone in the shops were polite and well mannered, hello everytime we walked in and goodbye when we left, everytime without exception everywhere we went.

The Roads and transport were superbly maintained and there were hardly any roadworks. There were very few Police around and no speed camera's or traffic wardens and clampers hiding behind hedges at every turn. Everyone drove around freely it was bliss. As they make money on road tolls they do not need the money making speed camera's and traffic wardens I suppose or maybe they do not victimise their motorists like they do here.

The standard of living and life was pretty Rosey from where I was standing and the properties prices were about 50% of what they are even now with a decent 3 bed detached for £ 150000 - £ 200000 in pleasant surroundings in a better climate.

This myth that the UK is the best place to live in the World is a crock of shite imo, infact they more I see the more I realise what a god awful place this country is. Overpriced, long hours, awful climate, objectionable people.

The only place where it was more like the UK was Paris where everyone drove around like idiots and cut you up , it was every man for himself. Having said that the City is head and shoulders better designed than any in the UK and the sites to see and culture dwarf London's.

I have been to France a few times in different areas and maintain it is by far a better country than the UK in almost all respects.

Does anyone maintian the UK is still the best place to live in the UK and , er, Why ?.

I agree with the sentiments and I love France, hope one day to live over there, but you've obviously not been to any major French cities to make that statement!

Paris was quite different but worth it for the sites. Normandy was a great place to live. I would have not hesitation in living there if I had a chance infact I was considering seeing if they needed mortgage brokers for English people buying there.

I'll wave goodbye from the quayside. You wouldn't catch me living anywhere near Frogland.

I think that what has happened in the UK to a much greater extent than in much of Western Europe (not just France, but Germany, Spain etc) is a loss of civic pride or civic responsibility. This has resulted in town centres being surrendered to young binge drinkers in the evenings/nights, no real investment in communal infrastructure - especially decent sport and leisure facilities. We also take a perverse delight in our major civil engineering projects failing (eg T5, Wembley, everything to do with the 2012 Olympics) and this is reinforced by a cynical and I believe manipulative tabloid media. However, I don't think that everything in France is rosey (no pun intended) - was it last year or the year before that the banlieux went up in flames. What about the banners put up by PSG fans for the visit of Lens (I think). I think Germany is probably still the paragon for social cohesion and civic pride in Western Europe - everything is meticulously clean and urban deprivation is almost impossible to find (although I have to admit to not going to look for it) in all but the very largest cities.

I just think at the moment this country is a steaming turd of a nation and the credit crunch and my chosen profession is probably not helping my mood but I think we are brainwashed into thinking this country is great and we are privildeged to live here by tossers like Gordon Brown and yes we are compared to Iraq or Zimbabwe but most of Europe is better than this country.

Whether I've just noticed it more, having been in Carcassonne a couple of months ago. But there's a fair few poster, here, myself included with the same opinion.

As Clarkson says:-
Why do you never see a Frenchman when you're on holiday?
Because they have no need to leave France.

For the record, go south, young man.
Carcassonne and the Pyrenees (sp) was stunning.

France is quite weird in that's a sort of very well-kept secret. I'd wager that very few of us could stick apin in themap and identify many of their major cities with any accuracy. Their major towns are lovely, and their individual villages obscure and gorgeous. And don't even get me STARTED on their always-chic hirsute-armpitted wimmen

And they sure as hell know how to organise labour and influence governments

French way of life is far superior to British way of life IMHO

Tho surely Greek way of life is better than either

Also the European nation I most enjoy playing football is France followed by Spain, England would not be in the top 10 and in the World my favourote footballing nation is Mexico and swept along with it I almost thought about buying a national France football top in a sports shop in Bayeux for a bargain 50 euro's but sense just gripped me in time before I did.

The ones that do brave the trip are literally bussed direct from the Ferry moored at Newhaven into Brighton.

Makes you think.

We're not THAT far along the coast from Newhaven.

Build some kind of harbour in the middle of town or the middle of the sea or somesuch. Could be quids in

sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but what the f*** has the Euro got to do with any of that? its the French livestlye thats different and responsible for most points you raise.

except, if you went through Kent, Sussex, West country, Cotswold (or anywhere really) villages you would probably say the same, picture post card greens with a few people sipping cider and taking in the sunset. Paris and the mjor cities have just as many slums and problem areas as we do. Its just in the counrty they are more spread out then us, have more space and dont feel the need to make every provincial town into a miniture city. as for house prices, as i understand it they dont have the culture of home ownership, they would rather rent than buy so the prices stay low. If everything is so great how come they just voted leader who wants to make them more like us (economically at least).

now the behaviour here is generally far worse than anywhere on the continent, and thats somthing we certainly do can learn from the continentals. but we first need to indentify and address the causes, which has nothing to do with the currency in use.

Who said England is the best nation to live in. Not sure I seen that anywhere. Having said that, I am proud to be English and the only other place I would consider living is either Australia or NZ. You talk of France, well what about the riots they were having a couple of years ago. Sarkozy (or whatever he is) also change the employment rules so you can get the sack for no good reason.

Furthermore, you probably don't see many french on holiday as they are probably just as jingoistic as the English except they do have their own mediteranean coastline.

England is not perfect but there is a hell of a difference driving through a country on you hols than there is actually living there.

Quite. Reckon most people contributed to the thread on an honest discussion of lifestyle basis, rather on the thoroughly discredited Buy-to-Let Property-Ladder basis.

I spend a lot of time in France and would move there full time without a doubt, if I could afford to.
