I find people who applaud pilots who land planes successfully equally baffling. Firstly, it's not entirely unfair for it to be expected of them, secondly it's all done with beams, ILS etc on modern jets anyway, I believe. You don't get people gathering by the runway at Shoreham Airport and cheering every successful touchdown.

For encore, he then says "And could you please ensure your mobile phones are turned off" and then there's another burst from the sea-lions' chorus.

What's all that about?

I've noticed this. There is something about being seated in the theatre that seems to magically transform the average cynical punter into an easily pleased simpleton. People will roar with laughter at every "joke" or amusing scene as if it's the greatest thing they have ever witnessed. Why do they insist on doing this? Do they act like this at home in front of the TV? It's kind of like, "I've paid good money, put on my best pants, I will have a great time regardless of what is put before me."

It's kind of like, "I've paid good money, put on my best pants, I will have a great time regardless of what is put before me."

I think that's exactly what it is. If you're sat next to one of these people you know you're in for a bum time. I've had more laughs at funerals than some of the 'comedies' I've seen, yet I invariably find myself placed next to the human hyena.

All I remember about that film is Pacino showing off his new dental work at every opportunity. He does introduce enough ham to feed a small army however, which almost diverts from the fact that the film is otherwise shit. 5.7 + 1 for Pacino's teeth. (Best Dentures in a Supporting Role)

Pacino's gnashers are indeed in full-on Panavision throughout, and they even had a slightly yellowed tinge I noticed (presumably for the role - you're not allowed bad teeth in Beverley Hills, obviously). A rather harsh 5.7 though Truff. The overacting HAS to push it towards a 6 .0 at least, surely.

I will mainly be watching this tonight, US's film recommendation for the week a very underrated film but it is ace 8.2

I thought this was a pretty good movie. A suspenseful movie, Hitchcockian in that an innocent man gets involved in a deadly plot. An intriguing plot that had me thinking what I would do in the situation. Christopher Walken was, as usual, creepy and Johnny Depp was believable. The rest of the cast was very competent. I'd advise renting it. Not a special effects extravaganza but a nicely written fast moving movie.

Fun with Dick & Jane - 5.7

This is a remake and starts pretty well with some amusing moments as Carrey and Leone fall from grace, become skint and then plan how to pay the mortgage, it all goes a bit tame for the last 30 minutes but it gives an excuse for Carrey to pull quite a few silly faces and Ti Leone is gorgeous and Alec Baldwin is a shit hot cool dude so it was just about worth the £ 3.50 hire money.

Final Destination 3 - 6.5

I think the FD films are above average teen horror films and all well worth a watch. This is no exception and the deaths are very gory with the nail gun being my favourite but it is a bit , been there done that and it cannot compete with FD 1 or the awesome car crash / logs scene in FD 2 but it is well worth a watch from a pretty good franchise. The ending well and truely leaves the door open for FD4 which is fine by me.

Saw Atomised on Friday. Compared to the book it was f***ing shit. Taken on its own merits is was just a bit poo. The book was about 2 half-brothers and their own existential crisises, it dealt with themes of a philosphical nature and had a very French fatalistic approach. The film is German and gets rid of most of the philosophy and ideas and settles for the relationships the brothers have for 2 women. The acting was poor, the story now soap operaish and melodramatic. The only person to come out with any credit was Moritz Bleibtreu who is a very good actor and was also in Das Experiment and Run Lola Run.

It was good, which was a bit of a shock - really enjoyed it and had some very funny moments.

Saw Superman last night. Was a good film on the whole i thaught, some bits were quite guessable (something bad happens, the big man comes and saves the day) but overall a good watch. Louis Laine is stunning! and there is a bit of an unexpected twist near the end.

Well worth a watch if your looking to tie up a few hours.

Yes and I thought it was good. You need to stick with it.

Check out The Piano Teacher by Haneke, it is his best film.

 

[Billy the Fish]

I watched Donnie Darko again last night and finally came close to understanding it. I've owned the single disk edition for a while and although I loved the film I wanted to properly understand it so I bought the directors cut Special Edition. What a difference it makes. (For those who have seen the film) In the directors cut you get to see pages from Grandma Death's book of time travel, this explains the visions that Donnie gets and why it is happening. There is too much going on in this film to even begin to explain so I suggest you go and buy the DVD if you haven't seen it already.

With a week off I managed to watch 4 family films on dvd.

1. Flight of the Phoenix 4.6 - very average film about a plane crash in the desert and the rebuilding of a new plane from the old plane, all rather impausable and lacklustre from an apparent true story, this was a remake , I hope the original was better

2. School of Rock 7.8 - Jack Black is my present favourite film start. He is superb in Shallow Hal and Rocked in this. Its about a failed rock star who teaches a class of schoolkids to make a band and play a big festival, like Gene Simmons did for real. Its consistently good and contains the classic line directed to JB " you are a fat loser and have body odour ". Watch it

3. She's the Man 6.8 - good teenange tale of girl who pretend to be boy and gets into the football team based on Shakespeare's 12th night. Good turns from the girl and I great performance from Vinnie Jones as the coach

4. The Shaggy Dog 5.6 - had bad reviews but took $ 60 000 000 at the USA box office. Its an amusing family film with some good moment and laughs and is a reasonable remake of a classic Disney film. A wet afternoon and some restless kids, get this out.

I went and saw Three Times yesterday. Quite beautifully held, but continual silence echoed thricely in a hundred foreign years meant me lost and dulled in at least two dreary chapters.
Some shots and moments were lovely though.
