Uncle Sams is SUPERB. Miles ahead of Grubbs.

Can't agree with this. Grubbs is MUCH better - more variety, better burgers AND better chips, better ambience. Uncle Sam's is OK, but Grubbs rules.

Brighton is truly blessed to have both. had a malaysian out of london road grubbs the other day for the first time in years and it was a disappointment though to be honest. used to be nectar after a night in the northern.

Uncle Sam's Chilli Sauce is delish. Love it.
It's been some while since I've had a Grubbs - thanks for the reminder, I must go get one.

I'm referring to Uncle Sams in Rustington, haven't tried the Brighton ones. The chips at the Rustington one are the best chips in any fast food place, and the burgers are superb, Grubbs is too greasy, last one I had was dripping.

The story when I was working there ( '89 ) was that they'd had a staff competition,a few years before that, to come up with the best recipe and it had been won by an Indian lady who was working in the "head office" by 89. Back then they had 5 shops. Defo a Tomlinson secret recipe though, they never let on what was in it and it turned up ready made in pots (unlike the garlic mayo which was mixed on site!)

Double Chilli Extra Cheese is the best best in the World, had to be ordered separately years ago & now is bang on the menu
The Indian lady departed to India long ago & in a leaving deal sold the recipe to the owner and do the legend continues

Veggie sandwich (i.e. a burger without the meat - none of this fried bean pattie crap) with extra chilli was a regular order. Cost about 60p in the late 80s. Thrifty

Love the Uncle Sams chilli burgers but don't think the chilli sauce is hot at all. Also I gotta say grubbs is always spot on for me.

I'm a massive (literally) fan but clearly undereducated about the things that matter: what is a "Tomlinson secret recipe"? Why did the staff in the much-missed West Street branch used to slur out what you'd just ordered into rather low-slung Tom Jones Show-style microphones? And why did that place close? Am I the only one who, hugely unfunnily, always refers to it as Uncle SPAMS?

i have always thought it was mad that west street shut and all the other diddy ones keep going. uncle sams does have a totally bonkers range of locations.
