Unbelievable - Lucas advocates the use of recreational drugs

I'm getting sick to the back teeth with the Torys taking everything said by Lucas out of context and reusing it to say she has encouraged it/is the cause of it. f***ing hell. The Arugs isn't helping, what a rag.

Generalisations are a bad place to go. I voted Tory, I smoke weed. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I'm not really a fan of Dr Lucas but having said that, its good to have an active MP throwing her weight into (or starting if you're cynical) the drugs debate.

Don't know what drugs HB&B is on but they certainly give him an excess of hot air.

The war on drugs was lost the minute Governments declared war on them. How do you fight something that has been part of human nature since we crawled out of the sea (another debate I know).
The current policy of Prohibition hasn't worked and will never work. The question is what would work? I don't think a complete legislation in the same way alcohol works would work. It would encourage people to spend most of the time getting wasted. Maybe a middle ground where drugs are available but are distributed by health care specialists would be a better option.

All these responses disagreeing with you, and that's it? Not going to attempt to debate any of the points made head on?

There is a gun problem in Brighton . Perhaps legalise guns then? Certainly a knife problem in Brighton - Legalise the carrying and use a big knives. ID fraud big problem, legalise it maybe?

I mean where do you stop?

The level of gun crime isn't in any way linked to their illegality - see the disparity between Canada and the US.

They're scared of her and her relative popularity. The Argus has ALWAYS been a conservative (with a small 'c') newspaper, pandering to the terrified HB&Bs of this world. We have an MP who considers an alternative angle to a given problem, and don't know how to deal with it, so they resort to a default setting without thinking the issue through or encouraging debate themselves. Thankfully, most people see straight through the paper's lack of objectivity.

A lot like HB&B is going through now.

Where do you stop? Simple - you decriminalise the ownership of something whose use would harm the individual using it! Hence the use, and possession, of drugs is decriminalised. Use of drugs - including alcohol - harms yourself.

Gun crime, knife crime & ID fraud directly harm others, hence I'm not calling for their legalisation.

The view expressed by Dr Lucas is not one held exclusively by herself, but also by senior police officers, and pretty much every government inspector and committee appointed to look into the drugs problem, so for HB&B to express his manufactured outrage and single out my MP for abuse, does not really contribute much to finding a solution to a multi-faceted by seriously damaging problem.

Pork pie land.
Wise words from Lucas.

A question, HB&B, do you think the current system works?

I don't. We are far too soft on the pushers and their masters who are destroying peoples lives.

People caught in possession should be dealt with "appropriately". If they are simply addicts they should be forcefully cleaned-up, if they are just "experimenting" they should not be turned into criminals.

The woman is clearly off her trolly, and unfit to be an MP.

pork pie - what, for you, is the difference between cannabis and alcohol? Why do you not think alcohol should be criminalised and treated in exactly the same way you outline above?

The point that i am trying to make here is that She represents cira 100K of people, and speaks on there behalf accordingly having been democratically elected to do so. In my opinion She should NOT be making these sort of statements, regardless of the rights or wrongs of the subject matter, She should simply be trying to make the area She represents a better place for all that live there.
How are we supposed to know what our MPs stand for if they're not allowed to express their opinions publicly?

I tell you what I find more repugnant: Career politicians that sit on the fence and say nothing until their established party leaders tell them what to say.

You haven't actually thought this through, have you?

Well I don't agree with what the governments doing at the moment, should I demand they run all their statements through me first?

I find it hard to believe that some people are so dead against what Dr Lucas has said.

Our current policies and previous policies have clearly not worked.

She is not advocating the use of drugs. You would either have to be incredibly dense or very anti-Lucas to say or believe that or both.

If we are more open about drugs then we are going to be able to tackle the problems better. It is not a 'soft approach' per se. It is an approach designed to actually tackle the problems associated with drug addictions and the knock on criminal activities, rather than push it into dark alleyways or sweep the problem under the loose carpet of a rundown bedsit.

destroying peoples lives.

In the main though, illegal drugs are not destroying lives. And this is part of the problem with the government's approach. They tell you they're bad for you, will kill you or lead to harder things yet most people know numbers of people who have a sly puff or a cheeky line and lead perfectly normal lives.
