I thought the same about Ten Haag at United - he'd hung his hat so firmly on getting de Jong and when that didn't hapen I thought he'd be toast - but it looks like I was wrong there.
So, I may be wrong about Unai Emery too - but TBH if I was a Villa supporter I woild be dancing in the streets of Aston tonight celebrating the appointment either. He was crap at Arsenal. Wonder if the malcontents who wouldn't put in a proper stint for Stevie G will give him any more respect?

He's done well in Spain so it will be interesting to see what he does at Villa, part of his problem at Arsenal was the personalities , possibly less of an issue at Villa. Hopefully he turns out to be a dud again.

I'd have thought that the evidence pointed very much to personaities being a probem at Villa.

In Emery's first season they slipped down to 5th in the last few games, to miss out on the CL (classic bottle jobs, much like last season).
His second season he was binned on 29th November after 13 games with them in 8th spot, 8 points off 4th, and 19 points off top, behind Sheff Utd and Wolves, on an 8 game winless streak, and off the back of a home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League in front of a half-empty Emirates.

Entitled Arsenal ? Maybe. He got a year. But they were far from moving in the right direction. Would I want Emery at BHAFC ? Given his track record at one of the biggest clubs in the country......mmmnah

Could be good - he was hamstrung at Arsenal by a Board not willing to spend. Villa have shown a willingness to spend. Unless they decide that's over. Of course maybe not exercising restrictions can lead to too much spending and trouble keeping everyone happy and it'll all end in tears/

Seems like a good appointment to me. I don't think too much can be read into his time at Arsenal. He was only there for a year or so, wasn't great, wasn't terrible in terms of results although my Arsenal supporting mates hate him. He was taking over from Wenger so it was always going to be a tough job.

If I was a Villa fan I'd be looking at his overall record in Spain and would be pretty excited. Two promotions, including taking almeria to La Liga for the first time in their history, three consecutive Europa leagues with Sevilla, some (inevitable) trophies at PSG, a Europa league final with Arsenal and another Europa league win with Villareal. He also made the champions league semi final with Villareal.

I'd say it's comfortably a step up from Gerrard. There's always risk of course but he has a long history of success.

It is laughable how narrow minded people can be. 1 bad stint at a premier league club trumps all the other achievements he's had 4 Europa Leagues (3 on the bounce with Sevilla) along with a French League championships and x4 French cups.

Seems a good match. Mid-table team and a manager who fails at the big jobs but does well in cups and consistently doing average (where you’d predict with his teams) in the league. They’ll be better off with him than most managers and an inexperienced Stevie G who needs to do lower league for a few years if he’s ever going to be great as a manager.

Exactly. Came in when they were as deluded as it gets and they thought "if only we sack Wenger we'll win the league". When reality didn't turn out to work that way, people got disappointed and blamed Emery.

Not really much different from some of Artetas winless streaks. In November or December two years ago, with Arteta in charge, they were pretty close to the relegation zone IIRC. But unlike with Emery, Arsenal had by then realised that they're not winning any league titles any time soon.
He would not be the right bloke from BHAFC, I give you that. He's a Spanish Chris Hughton (except with a fat bag of trophys) in terms of playing style; defensive structure and clear roles for each player, which isn't the direction Brighton has taken but could still work well for Villa.

Despite that, if he had sent TB his CV I think he would have been one of the candidates. "Took a team with the same budget as a mid-table PL side to the CL semi-final last season" is a pretty convincing argument you might want to get him a job.

The only way I could have enjoyed last season's game at Villa Park less is if I'd had one of my kidneys removed as the half time entertainment.
