I'm sure despite these losses they could afford to cover the costs, but in the real world it isn't that simple.
It will lead to further falls in their profits. This will impact on their shares, and when shares start to fall, companies act to show the market and their investors that the losses will be stopped. Costs will be cut, and this often means job losses, and not in the boardroom, where they all get bonuses for saving money by sacking staff, or changing the staff structures for more low paying, part time jobs that get their staff costs down to compensate for the loss of profit. It's the people who are struggling to get by as it is on minimum (or close to minimum) wage jobs.
