UK population is to increase beyond 70 million in the next 12 years

I'M SURE Firle estates are rubbing their hands with glee £££££££££££££££ ???

The interesting thing about the Firle Estate's approach to housing is that they provide housing at affordable rents for local people who will work locally and send their kids to the local school.

That's affordable rents (at lower than "market rents"), with no associated "right to buy" nonsense. Exactly what government policy tries to prevent. There's a lot to be said for feudal estate management.

Its easy to see what we receive in taxes, but you have...
Tax credit top ups as many are low paid
Health care
Schooling
10's of millions sent back to their children all over Europe

These are the sort of things that are always missed out and I'm sure many more things.

After tax credits, healthcare and schooling etc they pay in "a net fiscal contribution of £20bn" over the past decade.

Of course people are told that "we" need the extra housing because of "our" needs. Which is presumably why the latest estates to be built are being marketed for investment opportunities in middle eastern countries. Most properties are being snapped up by foreign investors for the letting market.

It's even worse in London, where the vast majority of properties are purchased by companies registered overseas in tax havens. Criminals have realised that the London property market is one of the best places in the world for money laundering.

It's one of the surest investments you can make, as so many Russians squirreling state assets into Mayfair and Knightsbridge have found.

I read a while ago that London house prices were appreciating 10% every year or so in some areas. For a lot of people their houses will have earned more in an average year than the occupant.

England doesn't have a housing crisis. It has a housing-south-of-a-line from the Severn-to-the-Wash crisis.

Indeed... so we just need to get on with it and build / convert / modernise housing in vast quantities.

Why do you need more houses....? Most of the day is spent in traffic jams.
