Yes, you have missed something - you've missed reading the first post in this thread. It praises Labour's immigration policies ( those that it has now apologised for ). Neither Labour or the Tories have dealt with this issue.

The problem that is not being addressed is housing. That would be the case regardless of how many immigrants were arriving. It may well be the case that the government can't do much to keep the number of immigrants down. Indeed, given the world refugee crisis, there's a strong humanitarian case for taking more immigrants. But there's no excuse for the government doing nothing to accelerate house building.

Germany gets 27 Syrian asylum applications for every one to the UK

For each asylum application by a Syrian in the UK over the past year, Germany received 27, according to figures released by the Home Office.

Data on international migration in the year to June shows that the UK received 25,571 applications for asylum over the 12-month period. Germany received 296,710 over the same period, according to Eurostat data.

In fact, Germany received 37,531 asylum applications in July this year alone – over 10,000 more than the UK for the entire year.

The UK received the most applications from Eritreans, with 3,568 requesting asylum in Britain. They were followed by Pakistanis (2,302), Syrians (2,204), Iranians (2,049) and Sudanese (1,799).

We would have more than Sweden and Germany combined. Most of the countries listed Italy, Hungary and Greece are just the places people pass through. It is no surprise that Germany, Sweden top the list with their generous systems.

Interestingly, nothing very much seems to have happened with regard to the idea that Lord Gage came up with about five years ago - to build new houses at the edge of the village to improve the prospects of the village school and the village shop, by encouraging local people to carry on living in local, affordable housing. I blame the lack of commitment by the local planning authority and the lack of interest by the government in solving the housing crisis.

Insofar as immigration into the village is causing problems, there is the continuing pressure on the community to accept newcomers. Most of the people who want to move in are extremely wealthy and, if they were allowed in, it would disadvantage local families enormously. Fortunately, the Firle Estate has a housing policy that refuses to allow rented accommodation to be let to people who are simply prepared to pay high market rents. The preference is to rent out property at lower, affordable rents to families who will work locally and send their kids to the local schools.

It's a shame that government regulations forbid local councils from having progressive housing practices like that.

Germany's net migration from 2010 - 2014 was something like 500,000 the UK's in the same time period was about 1 million.

If you want to somehow under cook the scale of recent immigration then you wont find much data backing up that the UK isnt being hit with unsustainable numbers.

One of the (few) things we should applaud the last Labour governemt on was the growth in immigration. It went from 6m to 7m in three years to 2009 but has slowed down since. It has taken 6 years to move the next 1m to 8m. Our economy needs more young workers to support the post war social agenda. Some of that makes sense. I cannot abide with the idea of our language being English in the way described here. A lot of our words are Viking/Scandi in origin. Our structure borrows heavily from German, swathes of our colloquialisms are French or Gaelic, we still use many Latin components and we have many patois and slang that is mind boggling. Been that way for centuries.
