Hi Guys

Been looking into a return to blighty but had forgotten how heavy the taxation system was in the UK. I am abviously also out of touch with the cost of living.

From your own experiences what kind of salary would support a married couple with two teenage kids and a mortgage/rent of £1000 a month. Obviously I'd like to have a holiday once a year and an albion season ticket for me and the two lads. oh and a bottle of wine on a Friday and saturday night :D.

I thought I might realistically get a job for 30k but after deductions it seemed to leave me quite a bit short when compared to my expected monthly outgoings.

Cheers

You would need a joint gross income of at least £ 40000 pa to be able to survive.

Personally I would stay were you are if you are happy. The UK is a shambles.

where are you coming back from ?

Ireland, which according to Herr Tubthumper's table has the lowest personal tax in Europe and that backs up my calculations. I actually only lose 11.7% of my salary in deductions.

why arent millions of people starving then.

minimum requirement for survival hahaha. it is if you have massive outgoings on poppers and chest waxing.

people on here are so out of touch with reality its not true.

That's the problem, I'm ok but the Wife and Kids would like to return as rural Ireland lacks quite a bit in the amenities department, compared to west/east sussex anyway. It's trading off rural peace and tranquility for the conveniences, entertainment and further education/job prospects for my lads and as far as my family is concerned the UK is the winner. Sorry MYOB.

I think I'm too old to go to the states and I don't have enough language skills to consider a move to another european country so reconnecting with our old friends and lifestyle looks like the likely outcome within the next three years I reckon.

Just out of interest, what is the take home pay for someone on 30k and 40k with a married persons allowance (if it still exists).?

I kind of roughly worked out that my family of four with modest outgoings, other than a mortgage of £1000 a month, would need a take home of 24k between us.

He's already said that they have ret of £1,000 pcm...add poll tax, water rates etc to that and that's one £20k salary sorted.

I pay at least £500pcm on food (2 adults, 1 10 year old, 1 student and 1 18 year old girl), £150pcm on petrol, then add phone, electric and gas bills, car tax and insurance plus all the other bits and there's the second £20k salary gone.

A 20k pa salary clears around £1,350 pcm. That is with just income tax and NI taken out...no pension etc.

That is the real world...that is reality

Dont take it so seriously mate. I am just laughing at the dramatic MINIMUM REQUIREMENT! statements and using words like 'survival'. Its all very daily mail house prices sort of conversation. It is not 'survival' by any stretch. unless you consider having a nice life in lewes and a decent motor survival.

Imagine about £2.2K

Well no it is realistic if you want to look after your family and not live off handouts
