It does seem really difficult for people to realise that politicians only tend to reply to these things because someone asks them about it. And woe betide the politician who said "I'm not interested in that" - they'd be pilloried or painted as out of touch weirdos if they did.

Well up to a point. Brown boasting about how he'd phoned to check on Susan Boyle's health was just a self-serving publicity stunt that no one forced him into.

Am already sick to death of all the hypocrisy and'grief' surrounding M.J.'s death and have upset my other half by saying oh God hasn't anything else happened in the world today?
So over the top!!

It's not as if he made an impact on our lives in the way that Jade Goodie did.

Brilliant!

I am genuinely saddened, and still a bit shocked.

In terms of talent he had the lot - a great dancer, singer, writer, choreographer and a great showman. I won't forget the buzz surrounding the release of the Thriller video, the impact of that album, then the impact of Bad.

He helped to make the pop music of my youth a memorable and happy event and he's left behind an impressive body of work.

For me, it's sad, regrettable etc that he was into children but I think the albums sales of the next few weeks will clearly show how popular he really was.

Music = good.

Person = not so much.

All this grieving about him is driving me nuts already. Sure someone wrote some really good music, and he could sing it and dance along, but was he really this "idol"? Probably not. It's Jade Goody-style grieving on a worldwide scale.

Someone even called it "the day that music died" earlier. Sake.

There are reports that someone has committed suicide after hearing the news. Not seen anything to confirm it but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.

Nor me.

Jackson, more than any other artist, seemed to attract the completely obsessive fan types.

I mean, with the various boy bands, you can sort of understand it, as they tend to be physically attractive and purposely put together to make teenage girls scream (and buy merchandise).

But Jackson wasn't physically attractive- at least not in the last twenty years or so- and yet was always followed around by the most obsessive, screeching, crying fans, both male and female. The sort of people who'd blindly defend him no matter how bad his records were or what he was accused of. Even kids who weren't even born during the days of Thriller or Beat It seemed to be part of it. Cult of personality, maybe.

So yes, you can easily see a few of them getting to the point where they feel they can't go on.

Absolutely. Neither do I. He WAS a fantastic entertainer, and like many others of my generation, I grew up listening to his music and watching his videos when he was in his prime, and I adored him. One of my childhood memories was staying up late to watch the worldwide premiere of the Thriller video on Channel 4 when I was about 12 or 13, and I was completely blown away by it. It was the number 1 topic of conversation the next day at school, and all I wanted for ages was a black and red leather jacket (never got one though) :(

But does this make me want to paint "I LUV U MJ" on my forehead and stand in the streets in a cascade of snot and tears, howling and wailing in grief at his death ? Errr...no. And I just think the people that go and do that stuff are attention-seeking tools. As someone else pointed out to me - if they're like that when their favourite pop star dies, how the hell do they cope if when they lose a family member ?

No doubt you wll be making your way to Liverpool Street Station later Easy, for the planned 'mass moonwalk'

Considering that we invest so many of our emotions in 11 blokes most of us don't know personally but feel attached to by their blue and white shirts, I suppose we're on slightly dodgy ground here

For some people, this guy was their life I suppose.

Personally, I don 't get all the wailing either. I think it's sometimes because people have lost someone they're very close to, and it brings that grief back. I knew a woman like that when Di died, and it was pretty sad really.

But overall I will be avoiding the news for the next few days.

John McEnroe has just talked about Michael Jackson for at least ten minutes on the BBC's Wimbledon coverage

But I guess at least he actually met the bloke a few times.

Michael Jackson's death v.sad for all his family and close friends and for his genuine fans.

Michael Jackson's life v.sad - no childhood - no reality - either a paedo who got away with it or someone wrongly accused of being one.

created some fantastic music and mentally crumbled -

Am I in mourning? No

Am I sad that three kids have lost their father? Yes

Do i think the world will be a worse place without him?No

Am I already sick of MJ tracks on the radio? Yes

Am I sick of the 'Grunkies' definitely

Have I just invented a new word? wow! that would be cool

I think it's amazing that people feel the need to tell the world they don't give a shit.
I think it's amazing that I feel the need to tell the people who feel the need to tell the world that they don't give a shit, that I don't give a shit that you don't give a shit.
So you don't give a shit? Good for you, keep it to yourself though eh?
As for me, well do you really give a shit? No, thought not.

I DO give a shit, Smudge. He was one of my idols when I was growing up.
I just don't feel the need to start publically blubbing about it. I must be missing a scouse gene or something.

You could be missing a North Stand Chat gene too, then, if you can't imagine this going BIG on here.

You might wanna take a day or two off to get over it, eh?

Course its going BIG on here. What makes you think I couldn't imagine that happening ?
