Well, okay, who set the laptop up orginally ?

Me and i was in the middle of the Packard bell setup but the laptop turned itself off due to the battery being flat, and i couldn't find the bluddy charger til it had happened. when i turned it back on it just set up windows normally and i don't know how to get back to that set up

If there is no signal coming from the router then it could be a problem with the wireless card/dongle. It will get a signal without any ip settings. Might be worth re installing the wireless software on your laptop and run from there.
Not worth looking into the wep key yet, if it was that then you would get an error message.

have you turned the wireless LAN switch on? it will be on the front or side of the laptop

I am on a Packard Bell laptop, I thought they all had LAN switches. When my laptop cant connect it always turns out the switch has been knocked accidentally. Mine is at the front, just underneath the touchpad, lights up blue when on. Are you sure yours doesnt have one?

Right I am an AS400 dinosaur, buit this is how I got mine to work

Look at the lap top.....

There should be a LAN Card or a socket on the side that looks like a telephone plug. On the router there should be also some of these. Get a cable ( if you dont have one let me know and I will get you one) and plug one end in the lap top and one end in the router, switch on the lap top and let it boot...there should be lights on the router now showing that it has connected.......

If this is connected try out your internet connection...if it works then it will see the router and you are ok.

NOW...unplug the cable and have a look at the lap top ....in the control panel network settings you should have one called wireless ethernet or something like that. It should have a red cross through it if is XP.

Go to control panel and look for an icon that says something like "wireless connections" Click on search and it should find your router. If it doesn't then you may need to reinstall the router software ( or go into the IP address of the router and check the settings) its normally in your manual. If its a lynksys its 192.1.1.0 or something like that.

keep persevering.
