Monday morning, post FA Cup 5th round, update.
Important info here is that the FA Cup winners take a spot in the Europa League. If that team finish in a Europa or Champions League spot THEN another spot is available in the EPL.
If the Cup winners finish OUTSIDE the Europa or Champions League spots then only one EPL spot goes to the Europa League.
Who is left that can effect this?
Man City obviously. Should we not win the Cup then we want them to win it. Indeed, losing to them in the final should guarantee us a spot.
Forest (I know, but have to mention them), look good for a UCL spot thus giving up a UEL spot.
The rest would take away that second Europa spot.
B'Muff, Fulham and Villa. Looking like top 6 is slipping away, especially as we want their positions.
Ipswich or Palace. Neither will finish in the top 8.
Preston. Anyone can dream. Presume they would also get a Europa spot.
why would losing to City in the cup final 'guarantee us a spot'?

Liverpool (nailed on to finish in Top 3) beating Newcastle (might not make Top 8) in the League Cup final on the 16th would help matters, wouldn't it?
Yes. Basics are that should Newcastle win the EFL Cup, thus getting a place in the Conference, and finish outside of any other European spots then no Conference spot is available in the EFL.
The range of European slots varies from 5, 4 UCL and 1 UEL, to 8.
why would losing to City in the cup final 'guarantee us a spot'?
Corrected. Probably thinking if we were in 5th to 8th spot and needed that extra place available then City winning would help.

Quite

Every time I do the Fishy predictor thing, I struggle to get us anywhere higher than 9th.
We've just won 8 of our last 10 games, so you have us slumping in form quite drastically, I assume?

Yesterday summed up why this won't happen.

While all clubs have injuries at this stage of the season, this is where having a strong squad comes into play. Just look at the players that came on for us. Even the likes of Weiffer and Gruda - who both flattered to deceive a bit earlier in the season - are looking the part. We're at the stage where we've got 24 or 25 similar standard players so the odd injury is comfortably dealt with.

Because of this, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we finished above Forest despite the fact that we were 13 points behind them after the 7-0.

I think we could finish above Forest, too. We finished above Middlesbrough the season they beat us 9-0, so could be history repeating itself.

They have much easier fixtures.

Would say we have to win every home game bar one to get Europe.

Ultimately, and assuming just the top 10 are the teams in the hunt, then to get Europe we have to finish above 2 of Forest, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Fulham, Villa, Chelsea and City, and hope that neither of the teams we finish above wins a cup. If they do then we need to be a place higher

Not really no.
I have gone for a lot of draws though.
It's just such a competitive league, that it's difficult to make significant progress.
For us to finish 9th, we would definitely have to drop in form quite a bit from a recent form of 8 wins in 10.

Just curious why you think we will. Our squad looking like pushing up a gear at exactly the right time.

We all know this isn't how Brighton and Hove Albion work. We'd be better against Real Madrid than Worthing U14s. Just the way we have been since Potter, really.

I just quickly ran through all fixtures on the Fishy thing, without thinking too hard about it.
I think we ended up on 59 and Newcastle in 8th had 60.

I definitely predicted a lot more draws, for all teams, than there will be, as it's such a competitive division this season.

That will obviously make it very difficult for any club to alter their position too much.

Whilst I agree with your point, it also showed how quickly things can change. Mitoma and Pedro injured, Lamptey banned (albeit only one game). I noticed Georginho had his leg heavily bandaged on the bench too. And that was just one game.

In fairness to Worthing U14s, they’re unbeaten against Real Madrid so it’s debatable who’s better one way or the other.

TBF I've just done it and it is very tight however you play it. I've got us on 63 (so probably just two of those draws turned into wins) and that would see us 5th according to my nonsense bollocks predictions.

I've got Forest continuing their poor form, Villa resurging and I genuinely don't feel I've gone overboard on our results. Who knows though.

I do think it's worth nothing that, from 3rd to 10th, only Man City are in better form than us over the last 6 games.

Agreed.

This is why I find it pretty amusing that Palace fans keep banging on about their push for Europe.
It isn't just about getting the points. It's overtaking all the other teams in your way.
