U2 Pop: their greatest album or just a load of twaddle?

I never bothered buying it when it was first released as the press slated it. Downloaded it the other day out of boredom. I honesty believe it is the best U2 album, hands down.

It's absolutely AWESOME. But then the Pop Tour was my first gig (at Roundhay Park, Leeds). Such a cool sound that pre-empts "new rave" by ten years.

Love "staring at the sun" and "last night on earth".

I'd recommend anyone who doesn't like U2's "normal" stuff to have a listen to this.

It's a very very good album, but not their finest.

Yes a different U2 sound but not in the same league as

1980 Boy
1981 October
1983 War
1983 Under a Blood Red Sky
1984 The Unforgettable Fire
1985 Wide Awake in America (EP)
1987 The Joshua Tree
1988 Rattle and Hum
1991 Achtung Baby
1993 Zooropa
2000 All That You Can't Leave Behind
2004 How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
2009 No Line on the Horizon

Which were much finer.

Just my opinion...but, wasn't their performance at Glastonbury this year the most excruciating and cringeworthy piece of shit ever?

With the possible recent exception of FFS Murray.

I thought Pop was a great album. It's not the "traditional" U2 sound, but that might actually be why I quite like it. It had a lot of different elements in it and it flowed really nicely as an album. I also rate "If God will send his angels" as one of their best songs (though the mix for the single didn't sound as good to me, I prefer the version off the album)

As they sold out Wembley Stadium BEFORE 'THE Joshua Tree' was released shows how pathetically little you know...
Indeed. That was one of the stupidest music related posts I've seen on here.

Pretty much ALL of U2's albums in the 1980s were excellent, as was Zooropa.

Zooropa is a very fine album and includes some of the best u2 tracks that exist: Lemon, Numb, So Near Faraway and The Wanderer.

Achtung Baby is my favourite. In fact it is one of my favourite albums ever. The Glastonbury opening sequence with 4 or 5 tracks off this album plus the Zooropa visuals (plus extra screens they had erected just for them) updated with Damian Hirst images was a very fine moment which will stay with me for a long time. Seeing Bono a little out of his comfort zone for once also added to the spectacle.

I dont mind people knocking the band, but I really get tired of wimpering people saying 'I dont like them; Bono is a bit preachy.' Find an original and/or genuine reason for disliking them and stop following the herd. If I was a huge rock star in Cuban heels I'd certainly be telling you lot how to live your lives the correct and proper way.

A short man in leather trousers, cuban heels and wrap rounds shades cringeworthy? And he had a man at the back who gave him replacement dry shades every so often. It's rock and roll my friend.

PS Q Magazine will be releasing a covers version of Achtung Baby later this month to mark the 20th anniversary.

YES! Thought I was the only person in the world who likes Zooropa. Sure there's a couple of rubbish tracks on it, but the 4 you mentioned there are 4 of their very best ever. Lemon is probably my favourite ever U2 song.

It was not even a proper release as well.

Had they opened Glastonbury with Lemon they would have owned the festival.
