Useful business marketing tool.

true, but theres more to business than marketing, and more to marketing that publicity. i recall recently some media analyst's report berating that x % of the FTSE 100 didnt have active twitter accounts, and how terrible this must be for their business not communicating to the public this way. what it overlooked is that the likes of Schroders, Allied British Foods or Rio Tinto have no need to communicate with the general public. many FTSE100 companies dont sell anything to or have any dealing with the general public. even a company like Kingfisher doesn't really have any purpose for twitter, though its subsidaries of course would. websites suffice.

The problem is with trying to call Twitter one single thing when the whole point of the service is that it can be used for pretty much any form of information. Some people use it for marketing their business, some use it for customer support, some use it to spread the news and, yes, some do use it for gossip. It's used for any form of communication that can fit in 140 characters, and beyond that it's up to you. You follow who you want, so if you want gossip then follow gossipers. If you don't then don't.

As for the only stuff that gets quoted on here being abuse etc... I'm not sure I'd agree. Just the other day we had the thing about LuaLua saying he was off seeing the doctor, believe that came from Twitter.

I work as a web developer and have written tools to make use of Twitter but I personally can't stand it and I am yet to feel the need to create an account for myself. For me it's like the annoying person at work that doesn't shut up and feels the need to tell you everything about their mundane life.

But that's only one aspect of it.

I find it really useful for news and for keeping up to date with changes in my area of business. You can just follow newsfeeds that interest you whether that is the Albion, the line of work you are in or the newspapers. You can then scroll down and ignore any irrelevant tweets and click on the link for releavnt ones. It saves reading the whole newspaper and you just focus on the bits that interest you. I still talk to my friends and family face to face even if I occasionally see what they're doing on twitter!

Bit of a dinosaur thread really!

We don't communicate with the general public through Twitter. We communicate with the representatives of our corporate customers to whom we have provided our Twitter account so that they can follow us. The same applies with Facebook. We have no reason to communicate with the general public through Social Media because they don't buy our products. We use targetted communication.

It is a platfrom that can cover such a wide range of things. For example it was tweeted that there was a helicopter over the compound where they found Osama Bin Laden and something was going on before the big news channels or anyone else had any idea. It allows news to travel quickly and can be very succesfully used as a marketing tool if you know the right way to go about it.

Unfortunatly there are also knobs on it like Leon knight that use it gain themseleves attention.

I didn't think I would like it. But I do. I prefer it to FB. Like the news feeds, things that interest me......and reading KLL's use of the English language. Fascinating.

But, surely, while you're sat round the dinner table they are communicating constantly with their friends who they have spent the entire day with but haven't seen for at least an hour? Or are you man enough to say "put the phone down and communicate with ME"?

They have been brought up to know that using your mob at the dinner table would be wrong:thumbsup:

It does have some practicle uses like horse racing tips that require speed of delivery. Like all new media its massivley overhyped. As the web was first introduced and it soon filled up with pornsites so twitter has beccome a haven for trolls and other idiots. ie very insecure attention seekers and vane shallow people.

fun if you like to watch leon knight make a fool of himself.

As for news thats a red herring, not all news stories are valid and unless you work on trading markets 5 minutes isn't going to make much difference to you. I haven't bothered with it, facebook is just as good, more in my case.

I'm on Facebook, rarely update my status, more to keep up with friends and family. I am not on Twitter I can't see why anyone would be that interested in most of the stuff I do most days, and I can't think of anyone I would really want to 'follow'

However I do work for Virgin Atlantic and we did win a few awards for our use of twitter and social networking during the Volcano issues a couple of years ago. Also it is useful for adding flight delay information, as they are push media rather than pull.

Facebook in particular is useful as the social media team (yep we have an entire team), can resolve questions on there for all to see rather than lots of calls into our call centre.

Listen folks, if you're following people that post about what they're having for dinner or what bus they're getting to work, then you're following the WRONG PEOPLE. And yes, Twitter, will be boring for you.

But there are thousands of interesting people at the height of their areas of expertise, posting funny, interesting and inspiring things. If you find it boring then quite frankly YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. You may as well as say that you're not really interested in anything.

Let's take the one thing we all have in common -the Albion. Most of the players tweet, the club tweets, the kitman tweets, the official photographer tweets (with great pics), Naylor and others at the Argus tweet (their tweets on deadline transfer day were brilliant and the first place for breaking news), most national sports journalists tweet, most football websites tweet, there are people that have aggregated Albion news in a single Twitter account that tweet, NSC tweets interesting stuff that's come up on the site, LOADS of funny and interesting fans tweet some great stuff about the Albion posting pictures, comments on games etc, Albion roar tweet, TSLR tweet.......listen , I could go on, but you get the point. If you think following all these people would be boring, then you yourself really are quite DULL.

A garden wall for gossips.... PURLEASE.
