Yep, because it is an unexplained and unexpected death. Particularly if there is a suspicion of drugs being involved, they have to treat it as a potential crime scene at least. If someone dies of an overdose, then whoever supplied them with the drugs has committed a crime, plus there have been cases whereby addicts have been injected by somebody else, usually a mate who's a user, which would then place them in the shit.
But essentially it's an exercise in caution: if you wade in, assume she finished herself off through the gear, and then clear the place straight up, then it completely ends any prospect of securing evidence should something suspicious later come to light. It's just about making absolutely sure that everything is indeed as it appears, and not missing anything that would point to foul play.

As a father of daughters I feel for the family. Its difficult to know how a family deals with a problem like this. Isnt it in the hands of the individual themselves to accept the harm they are doing themselves and to those that love them? What a tragic waste of a huge talent.

Incidentally I went to one of her gigs at the Brighton Centre about three years ago (?). Not particularly through choice, it must be said, but because the venue had been absolutely hammered by pickpockets the previous night at a Pete Doherty gig, and we were trying to ensure it didn't happen again.
She staggered on stage about an hour and a half late, which really got the audience offside, resulting in a few boos from the crowd. Her response was to slur at them to f*** off. Then she warbled her way through a limited set, looking distinctly out of it, and disappeared off home to a fairly lukewarm reception.
Talented lady, but never showed any signs of sorting herself out.
