Lucca is awesome. Get lost in the alleys and back streets. Florence, gorgeous.

My visits to Tuscany were never too planned and you'll stumble on wonderful villages and towns
Was having €8 bottles of red in Lucca for lunch.

Been there twice in the summer, close to San Gimignano. The weather was absolute shite both times, no wonder the countryside is as green as the Lake District

I also got very bored with every menu having a profusion of what turned out to be over cooked wild boar and shit service from uninterested high season waiters.

So no I can’t recommend it personally

Tuscan countryside//towns (particularly Lucca/Siena/San G/Cortona/Montepulciano)/weather/food/ambience always absolutely shit so give a wide berth and go Spanish Costas instead.!

Did a weeks cycling trip out there - really enjoyed it, and found out that all the good places are at the top of bloody steep hills. Sienna and Florence take a bit of beating even with the tourists

I used to be the brochure photographer for 'The Magic of Italy' back in the day and for a few years used to be there most summers as I specialised In Tuscany and Umbria, so here's my suggestions.

I can recommend Siena, particularly during the twice yearly Palio (29 June-2nd July and 13-16 August) which Ive photographed many times.

Volterra, Montepulciano, Arrezo and Cortona are all very nice

but, based on your list, Pienza might be ideal for you, nestled in the south of Tuscany very quiet, beautiful medieval town and good transport links to the rest of Tuscany.
Plus more Chianti and Pecorino than you can shake a stick at.

I'd give San Gimignano and Florence a swerve as everyone and their mother rocks up during the summer.

Me and a couple of lads panic bought expensive flights to Pisa when we got Roma in the cup

Despite having been to Italy over a dozen times, I've not spent a great deal of time in Tuscany - Florence being the exception. It's stunning, absolutely worth visiting, so consequently lots of tourists.

Neighbouring Umbria is a little more chilled in my opinion. Orvieto is nice, and Perugia is enchanting - both are easy day trips from Tuscany, or worthy destinations in their own right.

It's Italy though, there's so many wonderful places that it's quite hard to have a dud holiday.

I'm going to Bari in a few weeks, the furthest south I've been on The Boot, looking forward to a bit of sunshine, fingers crossed.

Empoli is worth a visit. If your lucky you can catch a game sadly I missed out on it. Awful stadium but beautiful surroundings creating absurd feeling I want now and then on vacation. Didnt stay long in Empoli but they have some ruins and a museum or 2 with dead animals and stuff if youre into that

The part where Umbria and Marche share a border is particularly lovely!
