[Football] Tuchel better than Potter

I don't think it's really "entitlement" from Chelsea fans, it's "expectation based on their reality". If we replaced Potter with, say, Chris Wilder (by all accounts a decent coach from a lower echelon) and weren't happy, would we deem ourselves "entitled"? Especially knowing that we can get in De Zerbi?

The fact is, Chelsea's last few permanent hirings have been
  • Tuchel (esteemed German coach and multiple trophy winner)
  • Lampard (club legend who won it all with them as a player)
  • Sarri (Most similar to Potter in as much as he was a talented manager with no trophies - Experiment to play better brand of football after Conte)
  • Conte (multiple, proven winner)
  • Hiddink (multiple, proven winner)
  • Mourinho (multiple, proven winner)
Given how badly it ended with their last two "lacking top level experience" appointments in Lampard and Sarri, I would expect Chelsea to be replacing Tuchel with a serial winner if I were a Chelsea fan. I don't see that as a bad thing.

That said, I couldn't really care less about Chelsea despite this lengthy reply.

I really am struggling to see why people are obsessed with Graham Potter. Especially now he's left.

Like it or not, despite an up and down few years at the helm he left us in a very good place, for a better paid job at a much bigger club. He's going through a sticky patch now not too dissimilar from what we saw several times in his tenure. He might fail, or he might be backed to bring in players that suit his styoe and be a roaring success. Or he might just be a bit average after all.

Whatever happens though, people need to get over it.
We are interested and quite rightly, due to the timing, manner and since he left several barbed comments.

Only the foolish would disagree he did not leave us in a better place, but there was room for improvement within his time here, and we will never know if he could have moved us to that next level. He has left and we have moved on, to hopefully someone who can and is willing to move us to that next level. The most important thing is the new manager seems happy to be here, even if in time we are stepping stone.

We take a vested interest in all things Potter for several reasons...

One: because we all like to know how are ex partner is getting on, be it with longing puppy eyes, or a snigger when things go awry, it is human nature.

Two: it is highly relevant to several of our high profile targets that have been mentioned in numerous media outlets are potential targets for Chelsea in January or the summer. Not only to us as fans, but the players themselves, if there are rumblings of discontent already, would a player leave to join Chelsea, with the threat of Potter being gone before they get their feet under the table and then potentially not being in the plans of the next manager. I would have thought moving to a team has a lot to do not with just the pay, but if you will play, will the manager get on with you.

This is highly relevant to us, so snippets like this are interesting.

Three: It is feckin funny....

I grant you that there is some relevance if the press are to be believed and Chelsea are going to sign Sanchez, Trossard and Caceido. But it seems unlikely to me.

I just don't get it.

Ex Chelsea player says GPot isn't up to it on an online interview that needs clicks. So?

Zzzzz

That is fine, that is your opinion and choice, mine is different, neither of us is wrong, or boring.

If you think people are obsessed then I fear you're not really reading the room.

I find all it both interesting and entertaining. He's upped sticks from here (and taken too many backroom staff to sit comfortably with any of us) after our club patiently rode out the shit results because we liked what we saw and believed results would come. And they did, but it took 2.5 years for that to happen.

He's gone to a club that has a recent history of winning the biggest trophies in the game and it's not working out well for them in the short term. Time will tell whether this is because senior players like Sterling don't like him because they only play when they feel like it or whether they simply feel there are better managers out there. It is a story we find interesting because either Chelsea give him time, he turns it round and it is a massive vindication of British managers being up to the job after all (and we helped with that) or it all continues to go horribly wrong and he and the other turncoats end up out on their arses with big bank balances but their coaching careers in tatters.

Either way, it's an outcome that Brighton fans are not going to struggle with, hence the exceptional levels of interest in how he's doing at the one of the least likeable clubs in the country.

I don't see anyone obsessed (except maybe a rather strange Swedish person). Interested? Yes, why not? Always interesting to see how people do after moving on from The Albion. Also rather amusing to see fans of teams like Chelsea chucking their toys ...............

FWIW I thought Chelsea were wrong to get rid of Tuchel, he achieved a lot of success with them.

That said I think Potter is a much better manager than those pundits and incredibly entitled fans realise. If they do not sack Potter and give him the time to implement his vision then he'll do well there as he'll have better players to realise that vision.

The level of hysteria surrounding Potter now was entirely predictable and for me makes his decision to leave Brighton baffling. No doubt he's a richer man, but his brand is being damaged at a club that historically has zero patience.

However more fool him. If he does get run out of there by some impatient spoilt brats then I'll be shedding no tears on his behalf.
I wasn't baffled at all by it. If a big club (and they ARE big, in terms of status, brand, CL football, etc, etc) comes in for you and you are going to go.

It might be a sample of one – and I've mentioned it before – but look what happened to Beale at QPR. Turned down Wolves, committed to his current club and the plummet from top to fifth/sixth in the table. His head was turned and in that instance – as with Potter at Brighton – the right thing to do was to go. Especially because he facked off up to Rangers and the MTL a few short weeks later anyway!

As for that video and the Chelsea fall-out, it's too early to say – a bit like RDZ, IMO. Both teams have had similar form since the managerial changes, so I'd wait until at least Feb/March to draw any meaningful conclusions...

I must admit I could not believe Potter would take that poisoned chalice of a job. When the offer was made by Boehly I thought Potter would respectfully listen and say thank you very much but I’m happy with Brighton. But no, he got absolutely suckered into working for, probably, the most entitled and impatient club in the Premier League with supporters to match.

As many on here have commented unless Potter gets Chelsea into a final top four position his days will be numbered. Americans are renowned for their will to win at all costs, and, patience is not a virtue they’re blest with. I await the panic button being pressed next May, if not sooner.

I'm not convinced he took any suckering to move to Chelsea unless by "suckering" you mean he had a five year £10m a year deal waved in front of him. I can't believe he had any motovation to move other than wads of cash. Which is why he won't give a toss if he is sacked. He will have his contract paid up so he won't care if he never gets a coaching job again.

Plus he didn't endear himself to a lot of people with his cheap shot at our support "needing a history lesson" when a very small percentage of the crowd booed after a disappointing 0-0 home draw during a long period of poor results. To be truthful a lot of Albion fans will be happy to see Potter fall flat on his face at Chelsea.

Fair...but there's a big difference between being interested in how he gets on (I am] and being absolutely obsessed with every Chelsea result and every single comment anyone in football passes on Graham Potter.

The point I was alluding to was that I thought (at the time) that Potter, of all the managers/coaches around, would turn down the thirty pieces of silver to concentrate on improving HIS team to success - possibly a place in Europe. How wrong I was. My thoughts and wishes of a much admired and sought after coach staying with us went tits up almost immediately. The whole episode still rankles with me even now.

Chelsea fans have a choice, either demand instant success or put up with the painful wait for Potter to mould a squad. We have all watched enough Potter to know that with time and the right backing he can make Chelsea into Man City's biggest rivals on the trophy hunt. It hurts that it's Chelsea. However, Chelsea fans won't wait and it will be both theirs and Potter's loss. If they choose the latter it will more enjoyable.

Yes, we know there's a big difference - and we aren't. Just amused and interested, or vice versa. Obsessively thinking that other people are obsessed, on the other hand ...............................

I’m definitely “over it”. But how this plays out is fascinating - can a “non-entity” of a manager take over a CL winning club and deliver success? Or will the prima dona players win out? How will a bunch of novice, billionaire football club owners react if results don’t improve? How restless will the fan base get? Truly a great case study unfolding in front of us.
Plus, the added ingredient (for us BHA fans) of a potentially huge dollop of schadenfreude!

Exactly. Over it. Not obsessed - but what a jolly good soap opera!
