Vankleek Hill, actually....
Tubular Bells was a work ahead of its time.

Try listening to Tubular Bells 2003 where he used all the instruments from the original album in 1973, but using modern recording techniques.

Anyway Incantations and Amarok are two of his finest albums for me.

How do those albums compare with Tubular Bells?
Are there 'songs' as such? Are they more complex as productions? Cohesive? Progressive?

It was a piece that was "of its time" and in isolation now may feel dated especially to nerds raised to think that base is everything. The reality is that it was and remains a timeless fusion of folk rock , classical, and technological mastery that will be heard 100 years after everyone in the current top 10 is long gone.

That said Ommadawn was better again for listenability :D

Not seen it anywhere on the thread but Mike Oldfield did a makeover on the Blue Peter tune. Has to be said it was equally as shite as all his other stuff

Tubular Bells = Tubular Balls.

I did, however, do my first serious groping in about 1975/76 to a background soundtrack of Ommadawn, so I can't hate Mike Oldfield to the extent he truly deserves. It was one of the only three albums that my girlfriend of the time owned...

Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits and K-Tel's "20 Golden TV Theme Greats" since you weren't asking. Ah, fond memories of trying to slip hands into underwear to the beat of Hawaii 5-0...
