it will settle after a while and the filter will do its job. I always find its a day or so after you clean a tank that it looks its best.

We used to have a tropical fish tank when I was a kid.

I remember I used to refer to the Neon Tetras as 'Aquafresh Fish' because of their resemblance to the toothpaste of that name.

Is it possible to separate the gravel ?or am i asking Graeme Smith to try to keep a clean sheetl::lolol:
As you are still in the set up stage it might be worth binning this gravel and starting again
Bear in mind corys like a sandy sub strata so have a good think about what you plan to stock with and do some research to find suitable fish / habitat requirements

The kids have separated it (for a cash reward), going to try just using the green and white and see what happens

I'll second that....just let your tank settle down for a few months first as clown loach are easily stressed and prone to whitespot. I've got 3 in my tank and they're superb.....they get a strip of cucumber twice a week and you can hear them eating it !!!!!!

I bought a pH kit a few weeks ago because i want to start keeping Discus (something i've never done before)

Whilst you are evidentally an authority on fish things, in case you need speciallist knowledge on Discus, have a look at my friend's site Discus South - 1st for Discus

They are based in Southampton (and scummer STH) but import, breed and advise on these beautiful fish. Too tricky for me to take on.

50 years ago it was deemed acceptable . However, modern technology has moved on a tad since then. The best way to start a filter system is to add matured water and gravel/sand from an existing set up.

back to your ark fella

i kept marine fish for some 17 years and i have found some of the old ways still work best, new modern equipment take away a lot of the fish keepers skills, all fine when things are going well but when there is a problem, the knowledge has not been learnt,

filters will only hold the same amount of good bactirea equal to the amount of fish and only clean them when there flow rate slows down

time is a must rush the introduction of fish and you will fail and cost yourself money
