[Travel] Tricky travel insurance (medical)

I've got a holiday booked in March and I'm having trouble renewing my travel insurance; Because I'm currently under investigation for a medical issue with my guts which has shown up a bit of an issue but not life affecting and I'm currently waiting for a consultant appointment, they won't quote me.
Anyone got any recommendations for a Travel Insurance provider who will insure me (even if it means gastric problems are excluded) ?

Do you have private health insurance? Might be worth checking if this includes travel.

Have you tried Post Office insurance? They give you some health screening questions. They might decline to cover you, but it's all online in real-time and at least then you'd know. As a last resort, the post-Brexit equivalent of the EHIC is no substitute for travel insurance, but it's better than nothing at all

They basically won't until you've got some kind of diagnosis either way in my recent experience with my Mum.

I had the same experience a couple of years ago.
No quote until you have a firm diagnosis.

I've yet to find any Insurer who will insure you if you have investigations pending for Travel Insurance. That's one of the problems with annual travel insurance, your risk changes mid term and makes renewing and getting cover extremely difficult. The rule of thumb is take out a policy the minute you book.
Have you spoken to your Insurer, assuming you booked this holiday while the policy was in force, because they should either pay out for cancellation of your holiday (on the basis that they wouldn't insure you and/or you are not fit to travel) or offer you some kind of cover moving forward.
If you have a stand alone specific policy for that holiday, things are a little clearer as the Insurer will hang on until you get a diagnosis and then decide how to take things forward.....

I have an existing policy but I booked this holiday after I got the stomach issue (when they ruled out the serious stuff like cancer and Ulcers I thought "ah well, I can put up with the discomfort if it isn't going to kill me").

Have you tried Staysure?

Staysure

We came across them when travelling in 2020 (when we were allowed to travel again) as they were excellent from a Covid point of view. They were recommended at the time by Martin Lewis.

We have stayed with them since we took our first policy with them in 2020. During that time, my wife has had a number of ongoing medical issues - waiting for test results etc. We had a good/sensible conversation with them over the phone and they quoted based on excluding the issues being investigated - which we were more than happy with as like yourself, none of them were 'life affecting'. Whilst these things were excluded, our annual premium actually went down. We have just renewed again and because they are now able to cover a couple of the issues, the premium has gone up - but not by a lot.

You can go through the quote process here ...

I'm guessing that at the end, assuming they will cover you ... you might just need to call them to discuss the finer details.

Will your existing insurer cover you for everything else and just exclude the stomach issue?

Wife comes home, says her colleague used Avanti insurance.
Half an hour on the phone to them and I've got a policy with dodgy guts excluded, £87.

So NSC 0 - 1 Wife

Thanks for the input though, appreciate it.

Now to start a "Where to watch the match in Fuerteventura" thread

Good news ... but did you try my recommendation of Staysure? Or did VAR rule it out :lolol:

I work in the medical assistance for travel insurance and a lot of them won't sell a policy.

However it's worth trying through bank accounts as they'll often just exclude that condition.

I think LV may also exclude certain conditions so may be worth trying through them.

Where are you going? If it’s in the EU, get one of these cards, it will cover you for emergency treatment

Just a note, this will only cover you in public facilities and depending on where you're going they may have few of them or take you straight to private, for example the public hospitals in Tenerife are on the North of the Island so anything in the South goes to one of two private hospitals.

Switzerland also don't accept the GHIC along with a few other countries.

I found LV insurance helpfully pragmatic when it came to insuring pre-existing medical conditions in December. Worth noting that once you take out an annual policy with them, you do not have to declare any new medical conditions until the policy is due for renewal which helps with the issue you mentioned.

Have been fine with us for any medical histories/meds, including a major health scare in 2019 in 'that department' awaiting an op. Also highly rated by Which? Be prepared for a lengthy call.

Good luck with the insurance and the health thing.
