I’d say about £350. I had three similar trees taken down and the roots ground out for £500. If they know what they are doing and have the right gear it doesn’t take them long. Also some tree surgeons may not be above the VAT threshold, as their turnover may not be that high.

We were quoted £675 to do one tree and grind the stump earlier this year but I just had a feeling something was wrong so said no. Still think to this day they were Travellers. Tree still needs doing so monitoring this thread for recommendations.

If you are approached, in your house and the van is unmarked or only has a mobile number on it, there is a fair bet they are travellers. Always choose Tree Surgeons/Gardeners that will give an address and landline number. If they are genuine and dispose of waste properly, they shouldn't have anything to hide (although you disposing of the waste yourself at the local dump may well make it cheaper as they will have to pay)

Shouldn't be that much if it is only 20ft.

My Dad had a 60ft pine taken down, chopped up and removed, for £400 this spring.

Did they have space to fell it in one? Or did they have to climb and delimb it? As they could change the value quite significantly.

I think from memory pines have shallow roots, so less grinding time and won't grow back. Softwood should be easier than hardwoods.

When I have hardwood, god that takes some felling, let me tell ya.

2 guys, half a day - £350 + VAT. (Based on work I had done recently)

That’s about right. I can’t find receipts for work I had done in a Shoreham about two years ago for taking a 15-20 ft tall bay tree down and the complete pollarding of a large willow tree. The cost will increase if you want the roots taken out or are just happy to have it cut down if it’s in a border. I think I paid around £5/600 but the pollarding and disposal of the willow was at least half the cost.

I paid 1300 in November for removal of dead ash tree and crown removal of a sycamore. This didn't include removal of the stump or taking away all the bits as I was happy for him to leave them where they were (the bottom of the garden is thick woodland and given over to nature).

Not massive, about 110 feet from the house to the end but the last 75 feet comprise a steep bank and a heavily wooded bit. Several trees, all with TPOs on them which is a massive pain in the arse.
