My brother is just about to do his second year working at Camp America, he loved it the first time round. I'll get some tips from him next time I see him.

As far as travelling America goes, AVOID Vermont at all costs. It's just trees and cabins and the Ben and Jerry factory. And they're not nice looking trees and cabins.

It's crap I know, I have literally spent years trying to find a way to work there.

Have friends who live and work in Phoenix, AZ. They all worked for American express in Brighton and got transferred out there.

Have looked at every route possible, and the only way i know I'll get there is if they include the uk in the green card lotto again!

The only way I managed to get to work in the States was because I do a job, quantity surveying, which has no direct equivalent in the US so it was relatively easy to get a visa.

Why not spend 3 months on the west coast, pick up cash work where you can, spend a month or two on a beach in Mexico (one of my favourite countries) and then back into the States for another 3 months.

I like this idea my brother spent time in Mexico and didn't want to leave. Any posters know of any reasons why this won't work?

Thanks to everyone posting never thouht you'd all be so helpful! BHA

I'm an aircraft engineer, and there's a lot out of work in the states at the moment. So I have no chance with my career!

The only other way I can think of doing it realistically would be to start a business over there.

Sometimes US Immigration will spot a pattern (when there is a short gap between leaving and re-entering) and deny entry

Mexico is amazing, you will love it, especially when you meet your first Vietnam vet on a beach smacked off his tits on gear thinking the war is still on!

You'll be fine doing it once, but anymore and they'll catch onto it.

I'll stay out of the drug routes from Mexico to US i think one way of making money i will not be trying

No, in all seriousness a friend of mine spent a year over there on a Uni placement and said it was one of the best years of her life. She saw a man have a poo openly in the street in the middle of the day. What's not to like?

Travelled the U.S a few years ago by myself. Some interesting adventures! If you are concerned about working out there the one city you could was NY its very easy to disappear, basically the English will employ the English Irish will employ the Irish etc, that was about 10 yrs ago. I was offered work by English lads I met in Greenwich Village as a removal man working over the river in Brooklyn. Bought a car (go for a Jap one if you can) in California because they have less harsh weather so they are in better nick and sell it on the East coast. Get yourself an International youth hostel card this will give you a discount in every recognised youth hostel. Be flexible in your plans I got fed up with the heat in Arizona and thrown out of the Grand Canyon (long story) and went north towards Seattle and into Canada. And that was just the start.

Oh yeah and American immigration were ***** and this was before Sept 11th, where as the Canadian immigration basically treat you like an old friend who's been away for a long time. And the amount of organic material that was being sold in Vancouver was insane and very good.

How long did you travel for? Were you able to go for over 3 months?

Got the correct Visa and stamp, arrived in Phoenix (shit hole) and was denied it's validation because i hadn't brought bank statements with me to prove my finances. Even though i had to prove it days before to the American embassy to get the bloody thing in the first place. I would say if going to U.S don't dick around with visa's after three months leave the country either Canada (which i did) or Mexico then re enter after travelling another country for a while. To be honest Canada turned out to be the best part of it.

By this I assume that you over-stayed? If so, what were the penalties?

Edit Just read the above, so stay for 3 months then up to Canada or down to Mexico for a while before returning?

No didn't over stay, crossed into other countries so you go back to square one, or you used to be able to do this. Knowing the U.S immigration they probably demand to give you an anal tracking devise these days.
