Plan on going travelling in the USA for a year 2013/2014

Any ideas on costs or best ways of going about it like working when there?

Also looked into Camp America is it any good?

A man thanks those who offer advice

Well for travel the best way is a car. You can buy something for relatively cheap on the east coast and drive it till it dies or resell at the end. You can get semi decent last minute flight details but it can be a pain to get around. As for costs....America is cheap and always has deals at restaurants, stores etc. As for working....not sure about the visas for English people or how easy they are to obtain. But lets be honest.....America has millions of people not working on Visas....I imagine youd be able to find work lol

You won't get a work visa and your trip will be limited to 3 months, unless your studying as a student.

Unfortunately the uk is one of the hardest countries to move from to the states. Even for a year. We're excluded from their green card lotto (which I know is to move there permanently). But that's just an example of how difficult it is.

The only way you can work there is if your new employer can prove he can't find an American citizen to fulfil the job. Or of course you marry an American, or have American parents.

Otherwise your there for 3 months. But you can find work on the quiet. You can go and join the Mexicans in California waiting to be picked up for labouring work on street corners!

There are plenty of summer camp opportunities where visas are plentiful and dirt easy to obtain. There's plenty of job positions in the camps from sports instructor, activity co-ordinators and pretty much any other outdoorsy job going. Flights to major cities are insanely cheap however as these guys above have said, invest in a good car.

Just for future reference, there are so many companies that offer very cheap temporary work visas as long as you agree to work in agriculture, 'nanny' type jobs and summer camp jobs as mentioned above.
However a 'general work visa' is near impossible without employer sponsorship.

Correct, I have a friend who worked on a farm over there for 3 months. I was under the impression though that the limit is still 3 months.

While on the subject of The US of A - Internal flights.

I've got it into my head there's a big discrepancy with these companies.
But I can't for the life of me remember who's good and who should be avoided.

I always use us airways when I'm traveling over there. The only airline I would avoid is southwest airlines. They're worse than Ryan air.

Here is a good web site with info for the original poster.

f*** sake why is it so hard to work and travel in the US, 90% of the people there are originally immigrants anyway.

This 3 moths thing take it you can't just get 3 month visas back to back? Also is it not possible to just travel for a year and not work in terms of getting a visa?

South West Airlines are very good. The only internal airline I've dealt with.

American Airlines are so rude, avoid were possible.

It's crap I know, I have literally spent years trying to find a way to work there.

Have friends who live and work in Phoenix, AZ. They all worked for American express in Brighton and got transferred out there.

Have looked at every route possible, and the only way i know I'll get there is if they include the uk in the green card lotto again!

3 times I've been on flights with south west, and the aircraft has been overbooked. They're constantly getting fined for maintenance malpractice too.

Why not spend 3 months on the west coast, pick up cash work where you can, spend a month or two on a beach in Mexico (one of my favourite countries) and then back into the States for another 3 months.

My step-daughter always goes with SWA to see her dad and we have never had any problems.

This site, British Expats.com, contains a lot of good, practical advice on visas, driving, insurance, when you can work etc plus warnings about overstaying your visa etc. As other posters have said the US is probably one of the most difficult countries for Brits to work in – and it’s probably got worse since 9/11.

This thread gives you a good summary of what you will need to know if you want to live / work in the USA.
