Technically they will let you do an ESTA at check in / at boarding if you get instant approval, but very risky.

Be careful doing an ESTA to. I saw a couple denied boarding on my last trip, as they had completed the form as UK - Diplomat (no idea why) or something, rather than UK - British Citizen !

I am involved in travel and it really pisses me off that most airline check in staff just deny boarding instead of explaining to clients that they can actually get the ESTA almost instantly if they have an Internet connection. But they send them away and make them pay a change fee to travel tomorrow as long as they have an ESTA. In some cases they just don't bother to do anything for them. Mind you, you have to be a bit thick to turn up for a flight to the USA these days not knowing that you need an ESTA.
