Personally prefer Dorchester to Bridport as far as towns in the area go.
West Bexington is a tiny village on the beach nearby - great pub on the front there but not much else. Lovely though.
I love Sidmouth. Spectacular cliffs along the beach.
Topsham is even better but completely different! A quaint town with antique shops and lots of pubs on an estuary.
Belstone is a really unique but beautiful village on Dartmoor with sheep and ponies walking around the village. It's also really convenient to get to off the A30. You can stay at the pub there which also does good food.

Wimborne, Weymouth, Wareham. Burton Bradstock. Cider at The Square & Compass. Dorset is a beauty. I’d avoid Bridport centre but everywhere else is great.

I would try and do the trip in one hit. Done Cornwall many times and it's good to get an early start so you can get through the M27, Ringwood and Dorset before the morning rush hour. Have a pit stop at Lyme Regis for a breakfast pastie and then crack on again.

SHOREHAM BY SEA
I have been to Corfe Castle a few times, last time I was there some bloke kept mentioning Far Corfe to me, I couldn’t find it anywhere
I was down at Swanage last February ..had to pull over on the road leading into town, as i needed to check an address…i was totally absorbed on doing this on my phone….when this pissed older lady banged on the window ……wanting a lift back the other way …..tried to explain I wasn’t going in her direction… followed a volley of abuse from her 👀….as the window closed …apart from that nice people

If you like Littlehampton stop off at Weymouth. Lyme Regis is a great call, we did this stop on the way to Plymouth this Summer, highly recommend.
On the way back Sherborne, N Dorset is worth a visit.

Some excellent possibilities mentioned here, cheers.
I like the idea of Topsham for on the way back and maybe one of your other suggestions or Lyme Regis on the way there.

Thanks everyone else.
They're mostly places in Dorset which we've visited previously on another trip.
All were decent except for Swanage, as someone has said, a relic from the 1950's and not a pound spent on it since.
Salisbury a good shout also but BTDT

I read the OP's thread title as meaning there is a f***ing massive traffic jam
