i love this common point of view.....yep, my mate taking £100 odd of these companies a year makes their bottom line figures hurt so much that everyone else has to pay more.....some facts for you below so you can shake your head out of the strange place it is in.....

In March 2013 Aviva announced profits of £155m.

Do you know the percentage £100 is of £155,000,000? do a tiny pee in the pacific, just a little one, then you might have some reference.

And that makes fraudulent claiming OK does it?

Did you consider that they would still make a large profit (WHY IS THAT SO WRONG?) but with lower premiums if they were not being cheated ?
Bit like the supermarkets, if shoplifting was reduced they would bring down prices. Some people have this tainted view that all businesses exist to rip off people . Most do not, they want to make a profit and grow. This is done by Satisfying customer needs.

if you feel it is a rip off here is a tip (that i do not endorse)....

buy something you like (camera, smartphone, etc) - keep the reciept. When abroad goto the police station and fill in a theft form and get the number / photocopy - then claim it off the insurance company. i used to know someone who did this every year and he started to feel he was getting his moneys worth. Insurance companies are a little dodgy and greedy anyway, and fixing a broken bone for £20k doesn't sit right either.

Your friend is a thief, pure and simple. By condoning it, you are no better.

Have just had a result! Halifax cover wife and I up to the age of 71 as part of our account benefits and to cover me for the medical excess they have quoted me £28 for the year, which obviously I have accepted and taken it out.

Agree. Perversely, men pay the same as women although throughout our lives we are between 50% to 80% (depending on age band) more likely to die. So we get much better value than any female tourist with insurance. What a cheerful thought for tha day.

It's illegal to charge different insurance rates for men and women in the EU. Has been since 21 December last year.

if this is how you think mega corps make hundreds of millions of pounds of profit you keep living in your delusions.

Your friend is a thief, pure and simple.

The insurance companies thieve millions yearly, a friend of mine takes a hundred pound or so from them.......scales please.

Do some research into insurance companies - it is at the top level a legalised mafia scam, making money from fear.....but you carry on mate.

Insurance companies thieve ? No one forces anyone to buy insurance. Sure, it's compulsory if you choose to drive a car, but again that's your choice. However, if you have evidence that they are breaking the law, then I suggest you pass it on to the police (or the newspapers, they might bung you a few quid for such a cracking "scoop").
On the other hand, your friend is setting out with the express intent to defraud.

Paid £14 for 4 of us for a week in Spain and that included an extra premium because one of the party was diabetic. Like others have said it is an insurance, you do not feel you need it, until you need it. Then it is well worth it.

I used to work for a travel insurance company on the 'assistance' side of things- I led a team of coordinators and can assure you that you are getting a bargain in the grand scheme of things. When it goes wrong it costs serious money, If you are in the USA and need treatment which involves operations, you will certainly need to remortgage to cover any costs. Covering an Air ambulance repatriation has a cost of around £40K.

My advice is get what you can afford, be TOTALLY honest (you may get away with it, but than again you may not- if you are going to work on that basis, why get it anyway?) and if possible fill in a ROI (release of information form) prior to leaving. It makes things so much quicker.

In all honesty it was the most difficult job I have ever done (i have done some hard jobs before) and I had to leave as it was sending me crazy!
