Yes, yes, I'm yet again coming to the good folk of NSC for travel advice.
You are all so very helpful when it comes to the do's and don'ts (??) of traveling.
This time: Naples, followed by Rome.
Cheers x
My 2 cents worth. Just forget Naples it truly is a huge disappointment, Herculaneum better than Pompeii but both worth seeing, Vesuvius is a serious walk up but worth it. Bay of Naples is generally beautiful but in particular do Amalfi, Positano probably Sorrento. Capri is worth the trip, about 40 euro's each, do take a lunch and drink with you as its criminally expensive and go up the chair lift for one of the best views ive seen.
If you rent a car (we have before, collect just outside Naples airport) a, get a small one. b. get excess insurance (excess is about 2000 euros) and if you are driving the coast roads just let everyone past, it is a bit of a nightmare tbh. even better rent scooters
Food is good and reasonable pretty much everywhere, some small private beaches worth seeking out and if you have time take a trip to Paestum, better ruins than Athens.
Train to Rome is an hour on the fast train from Naples, dont pay more than around 100 euros a night in Rome.
As the guy said earlier you could do the main sights in 2 days but then you can do London in 2 hours on an open top bus. To do Rome properly id say a minimum 4 days if you dont want to be chasing around. Absolutely see the Colliseum and get a guided tour, very worthwhile, in fact do all the sights probably except the spanish steps, they are just stairs and is the pickpocketing and scumbag capital of rome, vatican well worth even if not religious, (pay extra for sistine chapel). Oh do go to the Pantheon also there is a beach about 30 mins outside of Rome, you can jump a train down there. Pay the bit extra for British Airways, eat lots of ice cream, drink some Peroni and have a lovely time if you go.
