The other thing that would be good about re-nationalising would be that you'd probably get proper railway people attracted back to the industry rather than corporate middle managers just trying to make a profit.

It will not solve all the problems. In short, I would renationalise and increase taxes to pay for a decent service. The main reason for renationalisation is to stop money diverting from reinvestment into shareholders pockets. You can run it like a business if you want, DB operate as a business with the governemt ownng the one share the company has.
Raising taxes is the answer to the NHS, Nationalisation of Water, Railways and Utilities.
Not sure if anyone would ever get elected with a manifesto including that though. However good an idea.
TBF Nationalised railways were not that good.

Just got a full refund on my train ticket for Sunday.
I booked through Train split App.
E mailed them last night about the journey etc and had a reply this morning saying full refund in my account in 3 days.

Obviously I wasn't on the train or at the game 😉😉

Sent mine off last night, rejected at first so had to complete an appeal. Poor really they must be inundated with refund applications.

British Rail was loathed too. Strikes, slam door trains, the effect of weather, forever on the news. If anyone doubts that, I worked with people who'd commuted to London for decades in the 70's and 80's, they hated BR and remember punters getting involved in aggressive rows with striking workers.

But I do think it really all should be one entity again, probably public or quasi public. My main reason; the madness of different companies and tickets. In Sussex you can travel with 4 separate companies, requiring different tickets, you can't just grab the first train that's leaving. That's madness. It's not unique, I've seen similar in France, Sweden, Norway.

Rail fares won't fall under a nationalised company, if just means that the vast government subsidy won't go through a sham of various operators.

Sadly this is the root of the problem, a decent public transport service needs subsidy and Brits don’t like paying taxes. You get what you pay for. Same with the NHS, council run services etc etc.
I have no problem paying taxes - I'd certainly pay more - IF it went in the right areas and there was a total re-write about what it is spent on.

There's a massive undespend on some things and HUGE wasteage on others...........

Health and care is the key tax; I think this should be a separate ring fenced outgoing. I’d also break up the NHS into smaller areas; it’s too large, too centralized and too slow as it is.

My two refunds (totalling 150%!) from the cup game at Sheffield have been 'awarded'. But I haven't actually seen a penny yet......
