I'm just disappointed that they didn't accompany the words with a handy infographic. Maybe they're not very good at using Canva or Piktochart.

Maybe they should photograph everyones footwear that enters the 1901 lounge and run a vote on who has the best fashion sense in casual footwear.

I worry where this relaxation will end though. Before you know it 1901ers could look like regular football supporters.

As stated, the thin end of the wedge.

A Bennite solution.

I'm hoping 1901ers have enough self-pride to maintain a good standard and don't start buying their garms from Millets and JD Sports.

I thought Barber wanted to trim costs yet he wastes money on someone to not only type up ridiculous and unnecessary club communications but to "research the requirements of other sporting venues" when doing so. What a waste of money.

We lose our 1901 tea to fund nonsense like this.

Ah but he saves money on expensive, highly trained shoe checking experts, I'm sure he can afford to reinstate our tea now.

Having given this some further thought I am intrigued to picture the meeting:

1901 Man "This 1901 trainer thing, it's a bit stupid isn't it"
Other 1901 Man "Yeh, its' a football match, not the bloody opera"
1901 Man "But we can't admit that it was stupid all along though can we"
Other 1901 Man "Hmmm, problem, lets ask someone"
Someone "Easy, blame the evolving fashion in casual footwear that has clearly happened in the last five years"
All "Yeh, great, you're the best, we are so Premier League ready now"

The end. Of. Sanity.

I think that's basically EXACTLY what has happened.

Amex season 1. 1901 lounge.
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"
Punters: "Shame. Why not, out of interest?"
Club suits: "Inappropriate, for the 'environment'" [and bearing in mind the truly corporate scenario that the club had envisaged, they probably had a point]

However, as things panned out, it became very obvious that the majority of 1901 members were / are NOT corporate beasts at all, but simply reasonably well-off normal fans, treating themselves. And so...

Season two:
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"

Season three:
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"

Season four:
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"

Season five:
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"

Season six:
Punters: "Can we wear trainers please?"
Club suits: "No. Absolutely not"
Punters: "Why not?"
Club suit one: "Not sure. I'll ask" "Hey, why can't they wear trainers?"
Club suit two: "Dunno. Can't remember now"

And as you say, they couldn't then turn round and say it was a stupid rule all along, so along comes this daft suggestion that a seismic shift in societal attitudes to casual footwear has prompted the change.

Daft.

The prospect of clothing guidelines on what you cannot wear watching a football match is totally beyond me

Someone should have tested the previous footwear dress code by swaddling their feet in finest mustard coloured cashmere, with a padded heel.

Sorry, I'm not the expert here. For a more accurate picture feel free to email Paul Barber and he can ask Casual Footwear Evolution department.

Stop trying to make me look silly infront of your Brighton friends.
