Out of interest how many days this year has the service ran to time? It seems every day there's a post about problems on the trains.

I had to get a bus on Friday night (Saturday morning) from Three Bridges to Brighton. Took a good part of 2 hours arriving in Brighton at like 4. Absolute nightmare after getting stuck in East Croydon for 30 minutes. Teach me not to use a cloakroom after a gig.

And still they charge astronomical amounts to travel on trains that are either late or cancelled altogether.

Important alert

This is an important announcement

Changes to Brighton Mainline services for Monday 17 February - please check our homepage for details.

Date: 16 Feb 2014
Update: 16.00

Flooding at Patcham - changes to Brighton Mainline services

Network Rail and Southern have been monitoring ground water levels at Patcham, near Preston Park, for several days as this has been identified as a high risk flood site. The Environment Agency identified that when groundwater reached 47 metres above normal levels, there is a strong probability of flooding of the railway line in this area. This level was reached on Saturday night and the water continues to rise at around 4cms per hour. This has now caused flooding of the signalling equipment with an expectation that more significant flooding will occur.

This means it will not be possible for us to operate our normal service on Monday 17 February. Instead, we will be running a reduced alternative service with services between Haywards Heath and Brighton being diverted via Lewes.

A half hourly service will run between Hassocks and Haywards Heath, calling at Burgess Hill and Wivelsfield. Rail replacement buses will run from Brighton to Hassocks. If possible buses will call at Preston Park, but we have been advised of a risk roads may flood, so this will be kept under review. Passengers for London should change at Haywards Heath.
Passengers for London from stations east of Worthing and the east coast should travel via Lewes
Passengers for London from stations west of Worthing should travel via Barnham and the Arun Valley.

Full details of the services being run are available below. Southern tickets will be accepted on First Capital Connect services tomorrow, and vice versa.

How come that the Boxing Day match last season was postponed because a bus-only service was deemed inadequate and yet there's no problem now? At least, there's no excuse to postpone any future Boxing Day games now
