Traffic Cops

I see they featured that tragic accident from some months ago, that has in the last couple of weeks gone to court regarding the death of the woman from Crawley.
What a surprise that a Range Rover driver was still joking and smiling from ear 'ole to arsehole despite being informed he'd just killed someone

I never carry proof of insurance documents in my car.
Should I then ?

???

Only if the vehicle has only been recently insure where it been off the road uninsured a period of time, as the in car database they use is not "live"

Had this a while back where I took my private plate off a car, and y insurer gave me a cover note for the change in registration, but of course the replacement registration was not yet on the database they check.

I believe police will give you a producer for driving licence and MOT but if your not on the insurance database and can’t prove you have insurance via telephone call (during business hours) then they will impound your car.

Give over.

They ask you to produce documents at the Police Station of your choice within seven days.

Showing your age, thats was the old way.

They know who you are and what documentation you "should" have before they stop you.
Last night they knew the old guys name and DOB as he made the manoeuvre.

No insurance, they take your car. and rightly so.

1. MOST, but not ALL Insurance companies sit under the jurisdiction of the Motor Insurance Database, from which the Insurance details are viewed by the Police. Specialist (and this may include wealthy persons) Insurance companies are not all present in the said database

2. Updates to Insurance policies can sometimes take a few days to filter through to the Motor Insurance database. In these instances of 'recent expiry/amendment', the Police will have known the date of expiry.

Therefore there is the potential that the details the Police are able to view are not always 100% up to date, though the vast majority of the time it is extremely accurate.

Hence the Police in the scenario were absolutely right in their actions to give the driver a producer, having heard from the phone call that the Insurance was likely present...

f*** that - I don't even know who our car is insured through.

When you say "our" i assume your other half insures it, do you know when it expires ? or rely on the insurance company to tell you via a renewal notice ?

This is how many cars become unisured (not all), not through willful intent but the owner not knowing its lapsed.

Russ didn't take his insurance docs on Saturday , he got a puncture driving back on the A66 and OB turned up after 10 minutes , they were initially more concerned his car flagged up on ANPR as uninsured and no registered keeper.
