I need to help my MIL (80) who wants a mobile phone. She's beginning to come to terms (slowly and in no real depth yet) with an iPad that someone bought her and has decided that the 21st century is calling.

Can anyone recommend a smartphone for her that is a) not hideously expensive b) as simple as possible ?

Many thanks.

I have a google nexus 4 which has speech to text in Whatsapp to send messages. Works really well. This is really useful and would avoid fiddly texting. I think it's an Android Jellybean thing. Have never used it for SMS yet though. I guess SIRI would be useful and Android also has the feature (Google now?) where you can ask a question as speech and it does a web search for you. Again avoiding inputting using keys. This is Android 4.0 and above I believe.

She is surfing the web, innit. Plus I don't think she will manage texting(which she wants to be able to do) unless she has a touch screen.

My suggestion is that if she is able to work an Ipad then an iphone will be a good move due to the similarities in operation; i.e. no need to learn how to use another product. It's obviously not as cheap as other phones but from what I know it will certainly tick the 'simple to use' box.

I can report, from a thread I started last week, that the Galaxy Ace is pretty cheap and pretty basic and suits me fine.

if she has learned through an ipad i would suggest a second hand iphone 3gs/4 so it doesn't break the bank too much.

If she already has an iPad surely an iPhone is the answer
