Skywatchers eagerly awaiting Saturday's total lunar eclipse say that the spectacle could be the "best in years".
The eclipse begins at 2018 GMT, with the Moon totally immersed in the shadow of the Earth between 2244 and 2358 GMT.

During "totality", only light that has been filtered through the Earth's atmosphere reaches the Moon's surface, making it appear a reddish colour.

The eclipse will be visible from the whole of Europe, Africa, South America, and eastern parts of the US and Canada....

I don't know if anyone noticed yesterday, but it was already a reddish colour then. I saw it close to the horizon, so would have been seeing it through a lot more of the Earth's atmosphere then.

I think (from the table I have just looked up) that it is rising at 1438 and setting at 0217 so south west will probably be about right.
I'm not good at astronomy so someone more expert like Marc will be better.

Those times are wrong - I saw the moon rising around 5.30 and is just getting high in the sky now so look south at 10pm.

Up a bit, and look for the big orange/red-coloured circle.
