Regardless of where it comes from, and I neither know nor care, does it matter?

Your snidey responses to this illustrate exactly what is wrong with politics with so many in this country.

It's a good, sound common-sense policy isn't it? For whatever reason, it has not been implemented by any prior government, of any hue, yet all you can do is be snarky and play some sort of petty "copy cat" card, presumably because you are pro-Labour, anti-Tory and just so blinkered that you can't pass any form of positive comment as a result.

Sad.

I work in the industry as a chef, if this policy is implemented will waiters/ waiteesses get to keep all ‘their’ tips? I hope some way is worked out so tips can be shared by ALL restaurant staff.

Totally agree with this. I never understand it when people take this stance. So somebody else came up with it originally. So what? Have they implemented it?

People can be embarrassingly stupid when it comes to politics sometimes. It's not supposed to be tribal, it isn't football. Is it a good policy, yes or no? It should be about the policy, not about who is making it. Why has everything become about who is making the argument, rather than what is actually being said?

Some people are happy to accept bad policies as long as they come from the 'right' side. These people are idiots.

So there are no innefficiencies or waste in the public sector? You have taken spouting utter claptrap to another level!

Awaits the 'you did it first/better' retort.
Clearly that's not the case, and to be fair he didn't say it was.

You could probably make a case that waste rises exponentially (or at least disproportionately) as public spending rise, and that this in itself is a reason for keeping public services to a minimum. It's not something I agree with personally, because as always I think a pragmatic approach is best - sometimes cutting to the bare bones is a false economy and that the cost of waste is far less than the cost of not providing a service at all.

Consider the example of pot holes. We could leave them all and trim spending, which I'm sure makes a government look thrifty. But what happens is that our road network gradually grinds to a halt as roads become unusable. Plus of course pot holing companies go out of business as governments drive austerity. When we DO then need them, it's far more expensive to hire them - there's less competition among companies, and we end up importing from abroad to make up the shortfall.

Cutting services to the bare bone is not good government. As for waste, there are ways to cut waste BUT I'd argue that any government that doesn't delegate that issue to the private sector isn't doing it's job properly. Waste is there, get private firms in to resolve it.

It's a good policy, I won't be snidey about it. But from what I can see, you and Bozza are missing the real question: why is it actually news and why are the Tories trumpeting it as if it was a flagship policy? Surely something as trivial as this belongs in some little meeting room away from real debates needed in their main conference, and really shouldn't be featuring in any speech.

Tories like to trumpet their unity, but it's hardly a surprise if this is the sort of problem they've decided to address. Where is the debate on Brexit? Or the debate on how to manage our dreadful train services?

I wasn't looking at it as deeply as that, that was the first post I read on this thread and so responded to it. It was a general observation. I'll go back to pretending to work now.

Sad.

Its a remark based on replying to a quote about May not bringing in any new radical ideas, its highlighting what has been leaked that she will talk about.

If you think all I do on this board is make snarky remarks, have a look I am not about that. I have only ever voted Labour once (in Brighton during the Thatcher years when I was only ever given two options). I have never voted or been influenced to Vote Tory, yet I seem to be one of the few on here that will actually watch conferences, read polices and manifestos of all parties.

We just had Katy Bourne on our very own Police and Crime Commissioner she has reduced crime in our county by 7% well done. But I have given up ringing her services when I see and try to report crime, all she appears to want to do is reduce people and add apps. Is that a snarky remark!

As I have said many times the political system in England is rotten and needs completely changing for the better. However that will never happen under the current system, but may happen one day as demographics and society changes. Come on May suprise me with more promises you dont meet.

So lets see what way May takes this, and if she addresses any of the issues she has previously talked about - and in my eyes failed on.

Mental health - “If you suffer from mental health problems, there’s not enough help to hand.”

Equality pay - “If you’re a woman, you will earn less than a man.”

Education - “If you’re at a state school, you’re less likely to reach the top professions than if you’re educated privately.”

Crime - “If you’re black, you’re treated more harshly by the criminal justice system than if you’re white.”

Life expectancy - “That means fighting against the burning injustice that, if you’re born poor, you will die on average 9 years earlier than others.”

You should go and do something else with your time. Life is precious, and you've already made your mind up what you think of May's speech.

I am working thanks for your input, but I do actually like to stay educated on these matter thanks, rather than respond to much to snidey remarks I will keep watching all the conferences.

Perhaps she will announce to get toilets back on our trains or deliever how she is fixing the above things I listed that she hasn't fixed yet. I live in hope.

Do you really think services for disabled, disadvantaged, and homeless are provided on the whim of councils?
Money to help people is wasted?
yes, and no. we hear that service A is being cut because its none core, service b is cut because if none core. the argument seems to be fixated on this being cut but overlooking why these services are not considered core. how much of the services are being provided are not legal requirements but provided on a council by council basis without official recognition those services are required and provided.

One day you'll realise that waste is a fact of life and that flagging it up as a thing doesn't really add anything to the debate over whether or not it is right to cut services.
what im realising and suggesting is that a lot of "waste" may not be, its budget allocations to off-core services, hopefully contributing to debate with new view.

I agree its a ten minute rule bill, however its likely to be filibustered by some rural back bencher.

This a truly appalling post: people's lives are being affected by this.

I can speak from experience here: my daughter has educational special needs and went to a specialist school. She was happy there and making good progress but, because of budget cuts, it closed down last year. She now goes to another specialist school but there's no money to provide a full educational timetable, so she only goes in two hours a day (and often doesn't as she sees it as a waste of time to catch two buses for two hours). We're trying to fight against this but we're fighting against people like beorhthelm who think of education as some of luxury.

It's not even saving money. There was a piece of Southern news last night about the cuts in Surrey, interviewing a woman whose autistic son was facing the loss of transport to get to his special school. She said that if help was cut, she'd have to give up her job to take him, costing the government more in benefits than it would cost to ferry him to school. It's totally crazy.
another one that seems to have inferred something in the post that wasn't there. why was there money for that specialist school and not there now, where was the funding coming from? is it not an obligation to provide and if not why not? im not suggesting the education is luxury, im asking if this was ever properly budgeted for.

I genuinely don’t think that there’s a less charismatic person on earth than Theresa May. How is it possible to look THAT awkward doing ANYTHING?

Again, you could have written your views on the speech this morning, or yesterday even.
