He doesn’t need to commit to any policies just yet and there’s no point at the moment with an election 2 years away. He just needs to sit back, let Boris do his work for him and decide on policy nearer the time.

Just seen Starmer’s statement though. It was shite. If you have to read from a piece of paper to condemn this PM then you are not leadership material. Half of NSC could do it without an auto cue.

God we need a credible opposition.

Any policies he might put forward (windfall tax) will just be nicked by the Tories anyway.

I could indeed - but I would find it hard to keep it respectable and publishable. For that I would need notes!

Not forgetting when the Labour Party do suggest something (windfall tax) the government votes it down, dismisses it, then lo and behold repackages it as their own brand new shiny idea!

Why the **** should Labour give them more freebies to repackage?

I agree with all you said Hazza, but I don't think the nation will worry too much.

Let's see what opposition the others can come up with, starmer will be gone soon imo.
He looked flustered and desperate when speaking.

If Hunt ever gets in before a GE tories will make the biggest loss ever, I won't vote for him, he has been stabbing a BJ for so long now, can't stand him.

Yet you happily support someone like this? Do me a favour.

Please... be gentle. He is convinced this is a Johnson win in every sense and it could be dangerous to his psychological health to be disabused of his fanciful notions.

Calm it down Lever.

We’re going to unite
We’re going To get on with the job
It’s a good result for politics :lolol:

Honestly can he be anymore patronising to those that vote for him?

Agree Covid would have been a problem for any government, which is why we should have had a coalition during that period, to prevent the accusations of contracts for friends, snouts in the trough, etc.

The last large war we were in was governed by a national unity government. Johnson compared Covid to war. I don't think the government of Ukraine would agree with that though.

There is a chance that a unity government would have dealt with Covid better but there is also a chance that it would have turned into a horse designed by a committee.

I'd rather reflect on the fact that Boris and his party were given the task of looking after the country in that period and appeared to have numerous "work meetings" while ordinary, working, middle and upper class people couldn't bury their loved ones in a dignified manner.

‘A convincing and decisive result’.

What a ****.

I genuinely thought he might be a little more humble and contrite. I should have known better. I can see his bullish response to the vote coming back to bite him

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has responded to tonight's result, saying a "divided" Conservative party is "propping up" Boris Johnson after the prime minister survived the confidence vote.

"The choice is clearer than ever before: Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing," Starmer tweeted.

"Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost-of-living crisis and restore trust in politics.

"Labour will get Britain back on track."

Yes, I heard a fly buzzing on the radio. Not very inspiring. Albeit, probably irrelevant. I say that as a party member (labour)

Sadly it is down to who looks like they think they are the most winningest.

It's Johnson. In any other scenario, with a normal person, he'd be long gone.

I have to admire the man. He has found his constituency, and they love him. As long as he keeps his big dog chin up, he only needs a majority to be the winner.

Nah. He's the winningest winner ever. It will take a silver bullet, or an arrest and conviction.

I’ll be writing to my MP to convey my disgust at her public support for Johnson.

Before the vote I really hated Johnson. Now I also really hate the Tory party. Shameful so many backed the worst PM this country has ever had.

Jacob Rees Mogg told Sky News:

"I think we have a choice: Either she behaves like Margaret Thatcher ... or she behaves like John Major and leads the Conservative party to a terrible defeat. Those are the choices facing her and the party..."

You may wonder why he said ''she' and 'her'. - because he said it about Teresa May in December 2018 when she got a higher percentage of the party's MPs than Johnson did today.

I have no doubt that he'll be as consistent in his view as he always is. I can't wait to hear how the two circumstances are so different that the polar opposite view will be justifiable
